Then Nani kore fits, it's basically a surprised "What is this?!" that some people might translate as "What the hell is this?" depending on the tone/character/translator.

right! I was just wondering if it was a character I knew; speech patterns can vary pretty widely on colloquial comments like that. if they're relatively chill/soft then 'nani kore' probably works just fine!
