How trail designers build good hikes

a hiking trail designer is a job that, when you do it the best, your work is never noticed

because the goal of a good trail is for it to feel like an organic, natural part of the landscape

while taking a route that connects points of interest and anchors that aesthetically frame the trail on either side

while mitigating the number one destroyer of trails (water)

if a trail gets close to something interesting but doesn't actually go to it, people will go off the trail to see it

a lot of trail work is taking trails that are a century old walking path that people just started walking on and reinforcing it into an actual sustainable Trail

I'm always interested in invisible jobs

jobs that you never think about but that someone had to do

with huge amounts of knowledge and planning and design going into it
