[Evangelion] I'm finally getting around to watching the Rebuild and the difference in animation is really getting the tech across much better than I understood NGE
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
With the city moving underground and stuff
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
it could be because I watched it in like... middle school that I didn't get a good idea of it
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
Iiiii do not remember Shinji going and sleeping on the street after saving Toji and Kensuke
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
granted it's been 20 years, but I know Rebuild is different. I just thought it was different after the first one.
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
Mostly this is just making me remember the really fucking good Bohemian Rhapsody amv from the late 90s lol
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
The Origonal Eva Bohemian Rhapsody Video
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
I don't remember Shinji being so fixated on not getting recognized in general for piloting the Eva...
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
Like, from his dad I remember, but from everyone? It makes sense to fixate on how he might die but... eh
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
I mean I guess that makes sense too since he's what, 14?
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
And a nihilist at that.

I REMEMBER THAT AMV
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ

: I remember a lot of it very clearly. it's very well edited!

I used to collect a lot of Eva AMVs (it was/is my favorite anime) and yes! Yes, it is
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
OKAY WAIT I know Kowaru wasn't introduced this early originally..
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
I hope this means he makes more sense narratively cause I just remember being confused lmao
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
also I miss Fly Me To The Moon :c
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
I'll watch another one later, Ly and I are gonna play some Dragon Age
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
Coming back to this now that I've finished Rebuild and I sorta... Idk it made me cry because it gave so much better closure than the series?
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
Or more direct closure. But seeing Shinji be grown up and actually act grown up was really nice
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
Also that Utada song at the end is a bop
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
I'm gonna slowly watch the series too I think, to compare, but maybe starting from episode 8 or so since the first Rebuild is basically the same as the episodes.
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
But there's something gained in giving us a better view of Gendo Ikari and all he went through regarding Yui.
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
I think there's a lot that could be inferred from NGE but having him actually tell Shinji is I think very important.
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
It might also be a difference in time when things were written too, cause NGE was like. 1997? I think? So there is still a sense of 'get over it' directed at Shinji by the narrative as a whole instead of the characters directly
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
but the Rebuild started 20-25 yearsish later so there's definitely a different sensibility regarding how the narrative seems to step back and give the characters all equal time shown being supportive, condemning, or the gamut in between of how Shinji deals (or doesn't deal) with his very realistically depicted trauma reactions
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
Both to being abandoned and to piloting the Eva
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
It's also a different plot, but I do think that's partially at least born from being rewritten later too
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ
And the implication (flat out admission?) of this happening over and over and this time it's finally done. At least that's part of what I took away from the ending
ʙɪʀᴅɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴘʀᴏᴛᴀɢ

maybe you have more insight since it's your favorite, idk, but I'd love to hear your opinion
