Second Life avatars were more creative and unique before mesh. Fight me!

I agree. Even though I haven’t logged in since Yak died. I see enough here on plurk about it. Honestly it prevents me from becoming more active again. I have no idea how to choose a body, and then a head, hands, feet, etc. separate. They all need to match, and this thing doesn’t work with that thing, etc. That’s just too much work and confusion in my book.

I already spent lots of time “getting dressed” before mesh! I can’t even imagine it now.

Sorry, I'm on Team Mesh. Stuff looks so much better with mesh. WITH BOM you can get creative again like in the old days, with skins, clothing layers, tattoo, makeups. People just got to do it.

i think what you're trying to say hamlet, is people had the means to be more creative, the playing field was levelled.. anybody can rez a box (see the dude in your photo)
Gogo ♔
but i prefer today, having suffered through PRIM everything
Gogo ♔
there are more "humans" today though, i've observed that. back then there were a lot of nekos and all sorts of mix avatars

Everything has a hud these days too and quite honestly I never liked huds. They took up too much screen real estate. I was usually on a 15” laptop. Yak always did SL on two screens. That’s always been luxury to me.

There is def. a propensity toward human avatars now, because that's what dominates the market. There are still some unique choices, and even those tend to look better as non-human avis go, though even then they are mostly bipedal.

I think what Gogo ♔ sad was correct the playing field was more level then, but I disagree that the avs where more amazing. There is some truly fantastic work now. What I will say was amazing was the creativity with prims, people truly did some amazing creative work with limited tools. I would not go back to prim days though

I am so used to mesh avatars that going backwards just doesn't seem right to me. Mesh can look very realistic. If you are good at mesh modeling and rendering then you can be way more creative than with prims and sculpts. I still have some sculpt shoes but sculpts were limited. There are so many mesh heads so you can still look unique. So many options!

I have always loved HUDS. You can add in lots of textures.

yes Huds are fantastic, they are so helpful and reduce inventory clutter

Maybe the new ones and the kind that you can detach once you’ve set them up. That I can deal with but there’s no way that I can deal with it now.

Mesh bodies: When simple things like sitting on stuff are kinda weird and difficult in your virtual world, they're a way to make just existing in a body weird and difficult too.

My body’s weird right now too.

I think that, because the average SL user isn't a creator, they're at the mercy of what creators bother to make. If creators find that only the more human or conventionally pretty things sell, that's what they're going to put their time into. They want to be paid their work, and if fanciful crazy avatar pieces aren't selling, they stop making them.

"Creative and unique?" Yes. "Better" Not sure.
Mari
But there's more to it than just mesh v not mesh. The earlier adopters also tended to be more "creative and unique" in their approach. Those of us there now, just want something that looks good, now.
