So maybe he was going to offer to pay, buuuuut I didn't get that vibe

It was very much being done in that: we're a team here guys, let's work as a team, everyone pitch in so the job gets done! What a happy family! All of us pitching in to help big mommy business do what needs to be done

the company can hire workers to do that shit

And considering how much they try to talk people staying into unpaid overtime to get caught up on the backlog of work I just don't have faith it was going to be paid at all.

Maybe a lunch at best would be my guess

Just remember to act your wage, love.

anytime a company says we're a half family, I want to say "ok then you owe me Christmas and birthday presents, along with lunch and dinners if I'm here late enough. a family does that"

My big thing is I don't want to be a family. I just want to get paid. You have to earn the right to be my family and that's not by leaning on me all the time.

I had one boss who liked to throw around, "We're partners," as an excuse for paying us late. If that's the case, then I'd like to see the books and know how much I'm getting stiffed on profits.

And if we're partners, then I expect a say in how the business is run, which includes paying us on time.

man as soon as a business is late in paying its employees, that's when you need to abandon ship. the last time that happened to someone I know, they ended up being stiffed 9K$ and the CEO moved all his assets overseas so he could declare bankruptcy and escape paying

This was a tourist company. They're pretty notorious for getting unreliable from time to time, but if you put your foot down with them and threaten to get the state involved, they miraculously always manage to cough up the money.
