The real con comes from embracing your fate as "the rival to be redeemed" gives you some degree of power, which tricks most people into thinking they've found real magic, that they've actually rebelled.

This story played out like it was always supposed to. A common squire makes friends with a knightly prince, scrabbles together to the top, only to find out that his fate was always to remain in his shadow forevermore (as revealed to him by the god of fate). He rebels, darkness covers the land, but his friend refuses to give up on him!

At the final, climactic duel, he lies defeated, about to die, and the prince reaches out a hand with a kindly smile. You can still fix this. We can still be friends.
