Single-family homes with big lawns are a scourge upon the American landscape. But hey, having those means you’re “successful,” right? Living that there ‘Merican Dream!

What’s worse is that many municipalities are prevented by law from zoning for anything else in residential areas. Not Just Bikes had a good video about that - I’ll have to dig it up later.

On the other hand, we live in a single family home with a housemate [had two but one had to move to a different state for gender affirming care, because DeathSentence], and once we get everything fixed up, we're going to be doing a food garden and possibly a couple of chickens. That said, I always wondered by there aren't more tall apartment buildings ...

Or parking decks. Or better mass transit, or.... 'Not really, I've lived too long in areas where 'we don't want <insert other group here> coming into our town.'

Fearyfox(Reyn) : sounds like you’ve got a great setup! Single-family homes themselves are ok. It’s just the proliferation of them in America, along with sprawling suburbia and NIMBYs, that make them such a blight. But American towns aren’t designed to be walkable anyway.

Sean Gorham : Oh definitely. We really need more work-live-play areas, too.
