bacteria in oceans lakes rivers etc runs rampant. people get flesh eating bacteria disease just from going into bodies of water with a slight open wound. that though....nah. bad.
The wannabe mama mermaid said she was inspired to do a “free birth” — meaning unassisted childbirth — in the sea because she wanted to show what the female body could do on its own, sans traditional medical intervention.
yeah that just seems like a super unnecessary risk to both the child and mother like its great that it seems that there was no damage done but there could've been....
I feel like this is a middle finger to literally hundreds of years of research and development and progress in health care to make pregnancy and childbirth safer for women but sure, ignore all that to just pop out the kid in one of the most contaminated environments
" because she wanted to show what the female body could do on its own, sans traditional medical intervention." I mean statistically the answer to that question was "die"...
I only managed to have my first child bc they could inject me with pitocin to make it happen before I got too exhausted or the baby started to have issues, and it still took 48 damn hours
AND he had meconium in with him so they had to make sure he didn't inhale it so as not to have major lung problems. And that was a totally. routine. birth.
i am glad I’m not the only one who gets pissed when someone does something stupid and doesn’t have consequences but I mean I guess it is good for the baby! just. wtf lady
i guess i'm just kind of like... pregnancy and birth are already risky even in a hospital, with doctors - doing it in the freaking ocean with just your husband when you could... not do that... why?
"oh but women gave birth without hospitals for centuries" but like... why would you want to do that and put you and the baby at even more risk when you ... don't have to??
these are the same people that love to say breast is best without regard for individual circumstances and whether or not the mother is actually capable of breastfeeding lmao
MORE medical/hospital care has saved women and babies from dire results and the 'higher' maternal/infant mortality rate in the US is very much a problem of lower class and POC women being unable to access that care OR get taken seriously when something is wrong!
I never want to give birth or anything but like lmao I cannot understand not wanting to have the safety net of all the medical advancements and lifesaving techniques that doctors these days now have
also, there have been a lot more advancements that can make births easier so yeah, women can do it 'naturally' but like why go throguh that when you can make it easier on yourself/the baby
honestly I had a ton of birth trauma due to the OB on duty having a completely awful bedside manner among other things, but I still went back to the same hospital and practice bc their reputation was stellar and I wanted us both healthy
my sister at 16 was flat out abused by her OB (given Tylenol for pain. told an epidural would kill her baby. the doctor told the nurse that if her made "these stupid slurs suffer enough they'd stop spreading their legs") and yeah. she went back to that hospital for no2 and the twins

talk about unneeded risk
