Gabiluzbad

Ruka linked this and pinged me for it and they were right to because I’ve been thinking about this hypothetical game all morning
Gabiluzbad
Now with numerous typos fixed
Gabiluzbad
The year is 1899, and the apocalypse fucked up
Gabiluzbad
What was supposed to be an unstoppable tidal wave of demonic beasts is, instead, a steady trickle
Gabiluzbad
Which is still fucking up the world pretty hard, but humanity is fighting back
Gabiluzbad
Most people live in highly defended fortress cities, tied together by train tracks
Gabiluzbad
Which courier trains ride, guarded by highly trained (hah) railway guards
Gabiluzbad
A team shooter about getting a train across procedurally generated demon infested wilderness and ruins
Gabiluzbad
Tentatively listing the classes as like
Gabiluzbad
Mechanic, Scholar, Lancer, Scavenger
Gabiluzbad
Mechanic
- the biggest guns
- mines and turrets, maybe?
- can repair/activate old machines across the level that can give you access to shortcuts, supply caches, etc
Gabiluzbad
Scholar
- magic! Holy symbol that can repel demons
- the doctor! The only person who can get someone immediately back into fighting shape (other people have options for healing/support, but scholar has the strongest)
- knows about all kinds of demons and can highlight their weaknesses
Gabiluzbad
Lancer
- melee expert, only class built to go toe to toe with demons
- has rocket lance that lets them move super fast and impale large targets. Best choice for taking out big demons but has more trouble with hordes
- can carry downed allies back to the train where they can receive healing
Gabiluzbad
Scavenger
- the agile one! Can do super jumps and has climbing claws for hanging off walls
- rifle for sharpshooting
- adrenaline dart can get downed ally on their feet for a few seconds from a distance
Gabiluzbad
Everyone
- can repair the train
- has some way of saving downed allies
- can crawl slowly while downed
- can revive themself if they can make it back to a medical station on the train
Gabiluzbad
The Train
- needs fuel, which is in short supply so you may have to stop and scavenge for more along the way
- has a variety of stations on board that the players can man to improve it (crow’s nest for scouting, turrets for shooting, engine for increased speed, etc)
連続犬
I'm definitely ALSO thinking about this but I think I am perhaps thinking about it in a way different than you are
Gabiluzbad
The crew car
Gabiluzbad
- where you respawn if you actually die for some reason
Gabiluzbad
- has modular cabins that are loaded into it at the start of each journey. You have a persistent cabin that is your personal space. You can decorate it as you please, and you go there to manage your character loadouts and shit
Gabiluzbad
連続犬 : I’m coming at this from “600 hours of DRG”
Gabiluzbad
But I’m interested in your take!
Gabiluzbad
Anyway I still haven’t quite figured out how the mechanic can help down allies in a way that’s interesting
Gabiluzbad
Only the scholar can just heal you straight up
Gabiluzbad
Lancer picks you up and carries you to safety
Gabiluzbad
Scavenger temporarily zaps you into your feet with drugs
Gabiluzbad
Maybe the mechanic has a grappling claw which can be used to pull switches and such from a distance
Gabiluzbad
And also to reel bodies in
Gabiluzbad
Hmm I think scholar needs something that makes them feel cool
Gabiluzbad
Something that lets them bypass challenges
Gabiluzbad
Lancer and Scavenger are both pretty mobile and Mechanic has a grappling hook for interacting with things at a distance
Gabiluzbad
Maybe there are like hidden portals and shit around the world that only the scholar can see and interact with
Gabiluzbad
Actually that could be a cool mechanic in general
Gabiluzbad
Spells are just like
Gabiluzbad
Floating gems you find around the world
Gabiluzbad
And you can take SOME with you but most of the time you have to figure out how to use them where you find them
Gabiluzbad
But only the scholar can see them
Gabiluzbad
They’re acting on knowledge that no one else has access to
Gabiluzbad
Because they’re a scholar
Gabiluzbad
They’re educated
Gabiluzbad
The goal is to have each character feel almost like you’re playing a different game
連続犬
My take is WAY different, DRG is a very interesting way to do it, my thought was more a communal text-based broswer game, ala Fallen London, Legend of the Green Dragon, Urban Dead, etc
連続犬
I hadn't drilled down to specific classes but the idea of "asynchronously assisting a train along routes between major cities" made me feel like a browser game was an idea setup.
Gabiluzbad
I can see it
連続犬
I do love a LOT of what you have here
Gabiluzbad
Lancer is playing like
Gabiluzbad
A combination of Reinhardt and Winston from overwatxg
Gabiluzbad
Overwatch
Gabiluzbad
Mechanic is playing something that feels more like a tower defense game
Gabiluzbad
Scavenger is playing a stealth action game
Gabiluzbad
Scholar is playing some weird first person gem matching thing
Gabiluzbad
And you gotta organize all these different feeling systems while demons are trying to eat your intestines
Gabiluzbad
Anyway give me $100,000,000 and a game studio and I’ll make this game
Gabiluzbad
Picturing plays like
Gabiluzbad
Lancer charging into a mob of demons, grabbing the downed scavenger, and then rocket boosting out back onto the train
