12! Truthfully. Gojyo had a whole character arc about this! And in the end Gojyo is a very "explain himself while expecting no one to agree with him" type of guy
He knows how rare someone like his is in his world, and because of that he knows there are a lot of things from his experiences and perspective that people just wont understand
He also knows that he's going to have it tougher than most people because of it and has taken a very "I'll just do everything on my own and I accept that" personality
The only real bit of outside cultures that we've seen in canon so far are tibet/nepal as well as Hazels explanations of the west and what its like out there
But, sadly, if Gojyo was born in the west I doubt he would be alive today, and if he was he would be even more of a mess than he is having grown up in shangri-la
In shangri-la ar least there's that semblance of youkai and humans tolerating eachother so he at least was able to grow up in society (although in the dregs of it) and get by
But in the west there are very few instances of respect between the two species, where youkai live a more natural and feral life and humans are much more segregated to themselves. Youkai attack and eat humans as a food source regularly and youkai hunters/ exorcists exist
Being a half breed as he is he would probably be discarded if not killed by those on either side of the situation pretty easily as a child. Truthfully his chances of existence are close to zero not that they were very high even where he grew up. But hey at least he made it
It helps that in shangri-la it seems like knowledge of hanyou barely exists so he doesn't run into that many people who call him out for what he is because such taboos never usually happen
In the offshoot movie gojyi does run into another hangout. And although its filler I do like how they handel her as a characterat least until her shoehorn death scene
She grew up an aristocracy lifestyle with her father having been the leader to a clan. Because of that, although she knew her lifestyle was taboo no one ever treated her wrongly because they all respected her father so much
It wasn't until she came in contact with an outsider that she was introduced to the cruelties of the world and her life fell apart. So I'd imagine despite it all, of he came from enough of an uper class lifestyle he would occasionally have to deal with people talking shit but overall have a much better quality of life than he did
