Yep. Tolkien wrote a very male-centric super-saga. There are three main female characters: one super-powerful one who does nothing but awe some male characters (Galadriel), one who abandons everything for a "few" years with her love (Arwen), and one who disguises as a man to fight, but then gives all her warrior pride to be with her man (Eowin).

So: unattainable beauty, faithful wife, and "butch" who gets "cured" by the love of a man. Does one wonder why some men complain when female characters make up more than 30% of the cast in movies?
