Quinn Angstrom
cooking question from a baby tier cook
Quinn Angstrom
I've got rotisserie chicken and steamed rice as things I often have on hand
Quinn Angstrom
what's some basic shit I can do to spice that dinner up a bit
dragon time
Garlic
dragon time
Easiest way is some sort of garlic based seasoning in a little shaker so you don't have to muck about with spice ratios even a little bit
dragon time
Also, frozen vegetable mix - you keep it in the freezer and heat up some at the last minute to have with the rice
Quinn Angstrom
that I should definitely start doing
Quinn Angstrom
my vegetable consumption is dire
MundersOWundus
a vegetable amenable to roasting in the oven, if you have one
AzureChrysanthemum
Frozen vegetables are a godsend
Quinn Angstrom
I do have an oven
Quinn Angstrom
but idk
AzureChrysanthemum
They're super easy and a great way to get vegetables in your diet, just microwave a bowl for 5 minutes or so every night
MundersOWundus
I am also a fan of microwave-ready frozen veg.
Quinn Angstrom
roasting veg feels like something to be done in bulk, and also adds a lot of prep time
Quinn Angstrom
and I am cooking for one
skerple
those frozen veggie steamer bags are a godsend for me
Quinn Angstrom
so frozen is probably better
AzureChrysanthemum
Yeah frozen is totally fine for most meals
AzureChrysanthemum
You can get fancier when the occasion calls for it
MundersOWundus
a little butter and lemon juice is great for everything aforementioned
Quinn Angstrom
the steamer bags I always forget to eat the leftovers of because they're too big for one meal
Quinn Angstrom
what do I actually do with the butter and lemon juice
Quinn Angstrom
put it on the veg?
dragon time
Or the chicken
dragon time
If you don't like plain veg butter is a great way to jazz it up
dragon time
As is garlic
HotXC
many frozen veg can actually be roasted
Quinn Angstrom
they can also be microwaved
Quinn Angstrom
which is easier and faster
MundersOWundus
see quinns previous comments re roasting

McCormick Grill Mates Montreal Chicken Seasoning - 2...
look for this stuff at a store, it's my go to enhancement for just about anything
Haze Arquebus
if you've got the effort left to debone the chicken, some of that shredded up with some mixed veggies and chicken stock and the rice would make a decent cheat-y chicken soup
AzureChrysanthemum
Yeah with the roasting you CAN do it but there's no need to most of the time
kaylin
tbf, whenever I make roasted vegetables, I end up eating the whole pan because TASTY
kaylin
but you can also roast them and then toss 'em in a ziplock bag in the fridge
Quinn Angstrom
now for the additional baby questions
dragon time
You can also get frozen garlic cubes which is what I go ape for because if I have fresh stuff out I forget to use it all
Dirk Warhard
Frozen veg can also be pan-fried, which is Holly's usual strategy
dragon time
You can pop one of those suckers in with the rice
Quinn Angstrom
I drag home a rotisserie chicken, toss it in the fridge for later
Quinn Angstrom
--oh that sounds interesting
Dirk Warhard
easier to season that way than microwaving
Quinn Angstrom
--later remove it, tear it to pieces with my bare hands
Quinn Angstrom
while rice is cooking
Quinn Angstrom
put some on a plate, put the rest away for leftovers
HotXC
oh right something like https://images.plurk.com/JyNFSE9v0wowBhY54qd5h.png right?
Quinn Angstrom
then heat up the portion I'm eating
Quinn Angstrom
at what point during this process should I be applying butter and seasoning to the chimkin
dragon time
https://images.plurk.com/5Y4NdXXDwd2Y9z8CmF1X1X.jpg these suckers
dragon time
I would apply butter and seasoning while it's being heated
dragon time
Or if it's going in the microwave, butter before and seasoning after
Quinn Angstrom
I see
Quinn Angstrom
and that's just like, take some butter and slop it on top?
Master Chieve
that'd probably do it
MundersOWundus
yep. maybe rub it around. it'll melt into it.
Master Chieve
Just stir it a bit at some point to get the butter evenly spread
Quinn Angstrom
stir... the chicken?
dragon time
Rotisserie chicken is pretty oily to start with so butter might be redundant, you mostly want the fat because 1. Fat is tasty 2. It's a good medium to spread the spices and flavor about the whole chimken
Master Chieve
oh I thought we were talking about the veg
MundersOWundus
yeah the butter is probably best on the veg or rice.
Quinn Angstrom
okay
Quinn Angstrom
this is lots of simple options
Quinn Angstrom
I will consider them
Quinn Angstrom
thank you
dragon time
Go forth and consume my friend
Master Chieve
I keep a bag of frozen spinach in the freezer
Master Chieve
Because if you ever ARE frying something in a pan, you can usually just pour a bit in and it'll get you more veg in your diet without significantly changing the taste
Master Chieve
I dunno if you pan fry anything tho
Quinn Angstrom
not a lot
big juicy
yeah frozen spinch and frozen mixed veg are absolutely my go-tos
big juicy
although i tend to cook in large batches and throw them in there, rather than adding them to individual portions, but that's just how i do
Dragomorph
something i've done occasionally if i want fresh veg is that cabbage is good to just chop up and be ready to eat, but there's also... a lot of it...
GAY TENNA?
what i like to do is wrap that shit up in a cabbage/lettuce leaf but an entire head of cabbage/lettuce is a lot to use for one person. so maybe only consider that option if you can buy like, pre-beheaded leaves.
GAY TENNA?
or a smaller kind of lettuce.
Haze Arquebus
spinach is honestly a really good veg option for cooking for one just because of how far it cooks down
MundersOWundus
bags of preshredded cabbage are lifesavers tbqh
GAY TENNA?
shredded cabbage also good but you can't really make wraps with it
GAY TENNA?
big leafs become small when cooked though, that principle is fairly consistent
GAY TENNA?
they're very high in water
GAY TENNA?
Haze Arquebus : and you can put it in smoothies and not even taste it if you get tired of eating spinach too
GAY TENNA?
god tier vegetable
EsperBot
Personally I despise raw spinach; the texture is very bad
EsperBot
but cooked (or, I guess, blended sufficiently) it's good
GAY TENNA?
i lov the snap but also my dad is the same way, i understand
GAY TENNA?
it's a weirdly meaty leaf
GAY TENNA?
oh another thing you can do with rice and rotisserie chicken is
GAY TENNA?
MAKE SOUP
GAY TENNA?
you can buy stock at the store
GAY TENNA?
and you can put the rice and the chicken in it and heat it up. if you have like frozen veggies you can put them in too. soup freezes pretty well
GAY TENNA?
so even if you make too much, you can have some on standby in case you get sick, or just want soup
Gobgirl Summer
Baby carrots are also a really nice snack raw, and roasted carrots just rule in general
Gobgirl Summer
oh sorry i hadn't realized there were so many replies
GAY TENNA?
plurk is eating comments like roasted carrots
