[turning red] i have not seen this one yet but the backlash to it has been very. hmm. (spoilers within but not really nothing thats not in the trailer)

so the biggest crits i've seen so far are that it's very targeted to a specific audience and reviewers are having trouble relating to the character given their own childhood, blah blah blah

2. idk where this assumption that you have to be able to relate to a character to empathize or understand them

marvel movies, the original star wars, coming of age boyhood films, etc... do you know how many girls watch this stuff DESPITE the fact that the main character does not represent them?
proั‚oะฒadger
it is not specific at all
proั‚oะฒadger
just because the main character is chinese and there are chinese influences on her life doesn't mean it's ONLY chinese girls who can relate
proั‚oะฒadger
it is literally about growing up as a girl, but god forbid men have to think that women are humans right
proั‚oะฒadger
yeah half of the global population is a specific type of audience, sure
kelemvorite.
and obviously canadian culture is just so different how could we americans relate???
๐–†๐–‘๐–Ž๐–Š๐–“ ๐–‘๐–”๐–”๐–๐–Ž๐–“๐–Œ โœจ
right teenage girls are not like some sub species of human. neither are canadians.
kelemvorite.
and like how many movies are about boys going through puberty???? is it really so weird to have one about a girl

speaking as a bonus mom to a preteen currently going through puberty she liked the movie and related to it a lot

I saw one person say that they didn't like the overall message of the movie and was very confused.
proั‚oะฒadger
the overall message of be yourself and don't try to be someone other people want you to be?
kelemvorite.
i would say the message is also as you get older your prioerities change (like her prioritizing her friends over her parents) and that's not inherently bad, but part of growing up, and it can be painful for everyone involved, but it doesn't have to destroy things if you don't let it
space witch
oh no not teenage girls
