Pretty sure that sort of thing has been going around British fiction for a while. The Dark Is Rising has a lot of that, too.

And Earthsea predates that.

tho i will fight people who compare earthsea and HP on the basis of they both have a magic school because while Ged goes to magic school, the point of the story is not actually Ged going to magic school, which disqualifies it from the boarding-school genre imo

aside from being wrong, that's also a very mean thing to spring on someone looking for magic schoolchildren adventures

earthsea is amazing and quite a different thing
