Then he hijacks the intercom of both ferries and just announced to each of them that he’s done this, and that each of them has the detonator for the other ferry

So the only way they can survive is to blow up the other ferry before they blow you up

one full of normal citizens and one full of convicts

One ferry is full of ordinary people

The other is full of hardened criminals who are being transferred to another prison

Both of them find the detonator

The ordinary guy who has it is hesitating to do it despite the other boat being full of criminals who “had their chance”

He’s like “...they haven’t blown us up yet. Maybe they won’t.”

This big tough guy in prisoner garb walks up

“We both know you don’t have the guts to do what you need to. Give me the detonator and I’ll do it. You can say we overpowered you and you had no choice.”

And then the prisoner takes it, throws it off the edge of the boat, and sits back down

Neither ferry blows up the other

The prisoner guy is lowkey my favorite character in the entire movie just for that.

"Give it to me, and I'll do what you should've done from the start" and it turns out he means 'you should've fucking tossed that thing minute one instead of even considering it'.
