現任總統Sebastián Piñera也支持同性法案，不過他所屬的保守派對此有一些意見。

智利在2015年通過同性伴侶民事結合法案，同性伴侶經過雙方簽署同意書，可以獲得法律保障。

Piñera強調，智利「必須保障人民的自由和尊嚴」。

他表示：「我們必須深化自由價值，包含愛人和與心愛的人組成家庭的自由。這也包含所有兩人之間的愛和感情關係。」

除了智利以外，南美洲的阿根廷、巴西、哥倫比亞、哥斯大黎加、烏拉圭和墨西哥的部分地區(墨西哥市和18個州)都有通過同性婚姻法案。
