[people can't read on the internet] takes a shot
duck bastard
> Sensible individual: getting tired of weird sex-negative teens blowing up at adults for talking about sex
> Jackass: whErE are you talking about SEX that leads you to interacting with TEENAGERS
duck bastard
> James: presumably anywhere on the internet, which anyone with internet access and the knowledge to use it can go
> Jackass: so you're putting the RESPONSIBILITY on CHILDREN to not enter adult spaces!!!
duck bastard
yeah i sure fuckin' am
duck bastard
that, or their fuckin' parents, if the teenager can't be trusted to leave from internet spaces that they don't like
duck bastard
nice infantilization there too
Lea
Good fucking grief. When I went into sex-related spaces on the internet, I knew exactly where I was going, had a good idea of what I was probably gonna see, and was certainly not some hapless little babbu to be coddled.
Lea
I highly doubt much has changed in that sense!
𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘦
if they are old enough to be left unattended on the internet, they are presumably old enough to know better
𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘦
(unattended minors with terrible parents excepted)
Lea
(Except that I never even considered offering up even the slightest hint of personal information, up to and including my real name, and it's distressingly common to do that these days, but that's another issue entirely.)
duck bastard
yeah, like - so many god damn idiots were responding with whinging about STOP TALKING TO TEENS ABOUT SEX
duck bastard
the post never said shit about the adult talking to teenagers, you walnuts
Mica
One thing I think many people forget, and which could use some emphasis in the modern world is this:
Mica
The internet is not private property.
Mica
If you are permitting someone to wander around the internet, you are letting them wander around in public.
Mica
Unless you would feel comfortable setting your child loose to wander unsupervised in a physical space, able to navigate all the pitfalls and dangers, they should not be granted similar leeway in a digital space.
Mica
Therefore, by allowing a child unrestricted access to the internet, you are giving them the same freedom that many of us had in the physical world, as children: open the door, and let them roam.
Mica
By doing so, these children have been given a certain amount of responsibility for their own wellbeing.
Mica
If they can't handle it, they should stay at home. There are many things to do that don't involve wandering out in the public world.
Mica
Books to read, things to craft, people to talk to, songs to sing, shows to watch on more controlled platforms than youtube
Mica
even video games to play
duck bastard
Yeah, and, like... there are places where it's roughly okay for kids to be! I know that the vast majority of my time as a kid on the internet was spent on Neopets, Cartoon Network, and Nickoledeon's sites!
Mica
Of course, there are those spaces in the public world too
Mica
playgrounds and familiar neighborhoods and parks and community pools and stuff
Mica
they're not completely safe, but they're designed for children and they're meant for kids to use
Mica
people are watching these spaces
Mica
but you're hardly going on the Neoboards in order to have frank discussions about sex
Mica
in the same way you wouldn't have those conversations at the local rec center playground.
duck bastard
exactly
Mica
for one thing, neopets will ban you so fast.
Mica
But we're not talking about neoboards, we're talking about like.... the metaphorical street corner outside the cigarette shop
Mica
a place where it is completely reasonable for an adult to be and to have adult conversations, and which is it not illegal for kids to be, but also not really expected.
Mica
why are you here, child
Mica
are you trying to look cool
Mica
please go back to your own spaces and hang with people your own age
Mica
but if you don't
Mica
you are going to catch some smoke, and learn some new words
Mica
because we are not your parents
Mica
and this is not your home
duck bastard
and that's the thing that these people don't seem to get - random adults on the internet are not random teenagers' parents!!!
duck bastard
and you really shouldn't be handing that level of responsibility and trust to randos anyway!!
duck bastard
i was safer online as a teen when I was lying about my age/everything about myself and looking up hentai than some of these people, i swear
Lea
I still don't comprehend how people don't feel their skin crawl if they start sharing personal information online.
Lea
Internet handles were invented for a reason, dammit.
duck bastard
it took multiple decades of me being online for me to even show a modified picture of myself on a private plurk
Cookie Politics

Twitter is a 17+ rated app
Cookie Politics
so is tumblr
Cookie Politics
Facebook and Discord are rated teen, and the former has a white nationalist problem
Cookie Politics
social media is not a place for children
duck bastard
some people pull out the "but it says it's for 13 years or up!" and it's like
duck bastard
yes so they can legally harvest your data
ꜱᴜᴘᴇʀ ᴏᴏᴢᴀʀᴜ
I feel like a lot of the people bitching about this stuff aren't actual parents tbh. The ones on tumblr complaining, I mean. Though with how people are I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised if I'm wrong.
ꜱᴜᴘᴇʀ ᴏᴏᴢᴀʀᴜ
I used to have to interact a lot with preteens and such for work and only about half of them were allowed on social media and the ones that were had it locked down pretty well. Privated and only allowed to have classmates and such as friends.
☽ ʀᴏsᴇ ᴋɪɴɢ
man, I feel like it was much easier to monitor what your kid was doing on the internet back in our day. And I mean that in the "all we had was one family computer in a public space" sense vs kids have their own phone and tablet and laptop which they don't let parents look at.
ꜱᴜᴘᴇʀ ᴏᴏᴢᴀʀᴜ
the phone/tablet/laptop thing definitely makes it trickier to monitor in the physical sense, but I think it's also easier to control now? Back in our day you had to worry about forums and privately run websites and being computer literate yourself to block stuff.
ꜱᴜᴘᴇʀ ᴏᴏᴢᴀʀᴜ
Now 90% of the "actually interacting with people" side of the internet is through a handful of major corporation sites with privacy settings and stuff.
ꜱᴜᴘᴇʀ ᴏᴏᴢᴀʀᴜ
Like, if a kid is savvy they can get around stuff, but if they're just a normal 12 year old browsing the web and posting selfies you can try to keep it locked down.
☽ ʀᴏsᴇ ᴋɪɴɢ
Ah yeah good point!
ꜱᴜᴘᴇʀ ᴏᴏᴢᴀʀᴜ
My parents had no idea what I was talking about on Geocities forums at age 13 and we all shared a computer
Lea
Mine found out I'd been browsing hentai sites but what they did was talk to me and make sure I was separating fiction and reality okay.
ꜱᴜᴘᴇʀ ᴏᴏᴢᴀʀᴜ
They caught me reading smutty dbz fanfiction once and lost their shit and I had to pretend it was the first time I'd seen anything of the sort.
ꜱᴜᴘᴇʀ ᴏᴏᴢᴀʀᴜ
and my parents were pretty computer literate for the 90s and early 00s!
Lea
(Hilariously my dad had this conversation with me on the way to a sort of sex-ed thing sponsored by our church.)
ꜱᴜᴘᴇʀ ᴏᴏᴢᴀʀᴜ
and before the internet kids would go find dirty magazines or eavesdrop on adults or whatever, none of this is new. The internet provides easier access but by now most parents of young people should really know enough to block certain sites or talk to their kids about internet safety.
ꜱᴜᴘᴇʀ ᴏᴏᴢᴀʀᴜ
(or just flat out not let them use the internet unmonitored)
ꜱᴜᴘᴇʀ ᴏᴏᴢᴀʀᴜ
and I think most do? People just like to get indignant.
Lea
People want something to be upset about, but specifically something they personally don't have to do anything about other than to rant endlessly.
Lea
This, too, has been with us since basically the time language was created.
papermint tiger
i am so disturbed by the trend i've seen on tumblr specifically where literal children are leaving their actual age and a whole list of their triggers right on their info bar thingy
papermint tiger
like. Please stop
papermint tiger
that's going to backfire so hard on you
