[tv] I think one reason I'm so charmed by Only Murders in the Building is you never get intergenerational stories unless it's a family or it's about "intergenerational relationship" stuff.
Luke Skywanker
And in real life, it's one if the most interesting social dynamics!
ᴍᴏɴᴏʟɪᴛʜs.
I agree!
ᴍᴏɴᴏʟɪᴛʜs.
I love a lot of things about it but the relationship those three form is the best
Luke Skywanker
I think it's just made me realize it's missing in so much of our media
floofdoodle
That's a really great point, and it's so true
Luke Skywanker
I used to work at a museum where it was totally normal for a teenager and a retired dude and me to all be talking about the same subject and I really treasure that
Luke Skywanker
so many shows are about ~peer groups~ in some way
ᴍᴏɴᴏʟɪᴛʜs.
Yeah and their chemistry and friendship seems very genuine and natural not forced
ᴍᴏɴᴏʟɪᴛʜs.
I love how her relationship with each of them is different too. Charles has more paternal energy and they bonded really tightly whereas Oliver is the wacky weird friend to both of them lol
Luke Skywanker
Totally, it's just lovely
OhCecilia
I love the non-familial intergenerational thing too. I also really appreciate that they don't resort to any of the typical "young person" tropes and cliches. She's portrayed as a well developed, complex human with maturity
Luke Skywanker
Yeah, and there are some jokes about slang and various traits but they're the same ones I have with my parents
Gävlebocken
all of this is just cementing the fact that I need to sit down and watch this
ᴍᴏɴᴏʟɪᴛʜs.
yeah like when Charles signed all his texts with his name lol
Gävlebocken
(but what is spare time??)
ᴍᴏɴᴏʟɪᴛʜs.
adorable
ᴍᴏɴᴏʟɪᴛʜs.
it is absolutely worth the time
ᴍᴏɴᴏʟɪᴛʜs.
It's one of the best original shows I've ever seen lately, maybe I'm just thirsty for original work but I really was impressed to see something new and clever and fun.
Gävlebocken
oh yeah, I mean I knew I was gonna watch as soon as I saw it was Steve Martin & Martin Short in a thing
Luke Skywanker
It's a good show when you need a cozy time
Luke Skywanker
Like I put it in the part of my life I use Ted Lasso or Schitt's Creek
Mr Barrow
This show was so delightful and I really enjoyed it. Definitely had a feeling of originality about it and the leads have great chemistry
ᴍᴏɴᴏʟɪᴛʜs.
Yeah I agree it's in that Ted Lasso and Schitt's Creek bracket. Just good energy and good acting and that right amount of quirky
Luke Skywanker
And not too maudlin or cheesy. I guess I mean, it's not like too middle of the road
Gavitron
I really enjoyed it, except for ONE episode that almost made me quit pretty early on.
Gavitron
But I really did like it.
Luke Skywanker
Oh now I'm curious
Gavitron
I was really bothered by the episode where the punchline seemed to be, "Look how sad this guy is that his cat died." And then jokes about accidentally damaging the cat's corpse. Those bugged me a LOT.
Luke Skywanker
ahh, ok. That makes sense.
Gavitron
I'm glad that didn't let me get turned off the whole series, because I really did enjoy it overall.
Luke Skywanker
I think because it was paired with how no one cared the human died, it didn't hit me that way, but I get it.
Gävlebocken
oof, thanks for the heads up, that's probably going to bother me also
ᴍᴏɴᴏʟɪᴛʜs.
yeah I took it in the 'tim was so sucky no one cared about his death but everyone cares about the cat.' But I agree about the corpse thing in particular, that made me flinch so hard.
Gavitron
And I think it was intended as "wince humor," but still. Didn't like it at all.
