https://images.plurk.com/4rVq647RuKyGMPHSSmMqdm.jpg Today was not great so I did some plant work, the thing that makes me feel happy and in control of my life
boodle boy
It’s not the ideal season for repotting, but since I was putting off up-potting to keep everyone less stressed for the move, I figured better late than never
boodle boy
Some plants were BUSTING out of their pots and needed it so bad...
boodle boy
https://images.plurk.com/6HfA0QK4fUXHWULfGOWVju.jpg tradescantia on the left was DRY as a bone and my little anthurium fingers, I actually gave a smaller pot but with better growing medium
boodle boy
I’ve been trying to nurse that little anthurium back to health for like two years because I love it (they’re JUST starting to become more common once market, but I don’t want to give up on him)
boodle boy
I decided to experiment with making my own potting mixes this time. Coconut coir, bark, charcoal and some moss. I used a little perlite or cactus soil here and there when I needed more bulk and a little bit of worm poo for nutrients
boodle boy
I’m hoping a better, soil free medium for some of my aroids that have slowed down will help perk them up
boodle boy
Also the mix looks nice 👍 https://images.plurk.com/MY3kFP4WmUDeWdZ1lgsXO.jpg

https://images.plurk.com/7BvAiZqgOO32BlFAQvM5eZ.jpg begonia cutting that Mitch gave me....I’ve never grown a begonia so this is gonna be a learner for me
boodle boy
https://images.plurk.com/2LtSKpc1YdWg1MQFSw6ULW.jpg I also tried potting two of my monstera adansonii....I have cuttings from two different people, and put them in different places, so we’ll see how they do. This one is looking good so far!
boodle boy
https://images.plurk.com/6o7XMl42pJc68NgRVNvfyB.jpg up-potted my jade (middle) recently too and she’ll looking happy. That plant was a Christmas gift from my boss a couple years ago, one of my first plants in my collection and was only like, 2 inches big
gender nipples
begonias are pretty sturdy! my folks have one that's 30+ years old and it's survived a lot
shrimp heaven
weeps i will live vicariously through you, my plants all died and i've resigned myself to fakes only from now on
boodle boy
gender nipples : that’s good to know! Although weirdly I sometimes kill sturdier plants....cactuses? Cannot keep them alive.
boodle boy
shrimp heaven : there’s no shame in a nice fake plant!
boodle boy
I used to kill plants a lot but at some point a hyperfixation got me at the right time and place
gender nipples
i feel like cactuses aren't actually as easy as they seem tbh
boodle boy
https://images.plurk.com/4Sr5uJuaNPJvL6rzdluwix.jpg I am happy with this corner....I put that regal shield in the corner of the sill in a MUCH bigger pot which is not smart, but I loved the pot and she needed room. I’m just going to water very carefully because I’ll be devastated if I lose her
gender nipples
like i know we had some that got taken out because of rot
boodle boy
I like to fuss, and water my plants, which cactus DONT like
boodle boy
But you also can’t COMPLETELY ignore them
boodle boy
They’re good for people who like a slightly more hands off approach, where I was either too hands on with them....or forgot they existed
gender nipples
Yeah they want a very specific type of fussing
boodle boy
truly half the battle of plant ownership is finding a genus of plants that fit your exact level of fussing
shrimp heaven
yeah regrettably i've come to the conclusion that i just don't get enough light in the house even for low light plants
shrimp heaven
i might try a parlor palm at some point, but
gender nipples
https://images.plurk.com/6BuN2Qye68ekHy62kcv1KG.jpg to look forward to: a large friend
boodle boy
They sell a lot of good plant lights now that are just bulbs you can put in any light fixture! Sometimes that can be enough to give them a little boost in a darker house/room
boodle boy
gender nipples : ohh,beauty!
boodle boy
I am looking at my king anthurium too, and I think he needs to be up-potted but I’m scared
gender nipples
and yeah light is always a hard one, i have a east facing window and it makes some of my plants cranky
boodle boy
https://images.plurk.com/3fI4HaJ412ktu5rvrT7aJV.jpg https://images.plurk.com/6gBfIWkiNR5WVQhDhskRWA.jpg I got one kind of by fluke a couple years ago and they’re commonly over $100 for even small specimens nowadays
gender nipples
gotta shove em right up against the window and remember to turn them so they grow kinda even
gender nipples
those are so pretty and i want one
boodle boy
They get BIIIIG BEAUTIFUL leaves but I think this guy is about maxed out in his pot
gender nipples
love them big leaaaaves!!!
boodle boy
All of this is in preparation to finally up-pot my monstera, Morticia in the next day or two
boodle boy
https://images.plurk.com/2JPmFlfi8QrqRW3BCzinz1.jpg she ready
gender nipples
lovely
boodle boy
I also have a pole for her to climb because monstera get UNRULY at this size. Too much growing out and not enough growing upward
boodle boy
My favorite plants are big leafed
boodle boy
I love big, very jungly aroids that vine and have giant ass foliage
gender nipples
i love big leaves or interesting leaves, like i love false shamrocks
boodle boy
Oh yeah, a small but interesting leaf is nice too
gender nipples
i can't remember their proper name, but they're really lovely to watch
boodle boy
Another favorite plant of mine is million hearts which has cute little heart shaped leaves: https://images.plurk.com/5XrFyB5uoFixd8NvZD5Ec6.jpg
gender nipples
those are very good
gender nipples
i'm a sucker for a fern too ngl, they kinda fall under that interesting leaf umbrella
boodle boy
I haven’t yet had any success with ferns, but I want to try again
boodle boy
I think they’re really nice
gender nipples
rabbit foot ferns are kiiinda forgiving, they just grow slow and their little fuzzy branches look wild when there's a lot of them
godzilla normal
your pot choices are so cute
boodle boy
thank you! I like my pot collection a lot. Lots of concrete, terracotta and earthy materials that dont distract too directly from the plants
Ape Venom
I have good luck with ferns if I plant them in pots with no drainage holes!
Ape Venom
They really like to stay consistently damp and i find they are impossible to keep watered otherwise
boodle boy
that's a good tip! I might try a hanging one in the laundry room....it will be a little more humid back there and theres some good north facing light
boodle boy
https://images.plurk.com/3yOG0CNPe6pQFJR8hBmJDd.jpg finally gave mortician a pot up and a nice moss pole to climb
boodle boy
*morticia that is
