Why American Chinese Food Deserves Respect (And Why ...
it's not that asian food is weird but that caucasian food is boring maybe (specifically british/american, maybe, /eyes the french)
beachcryptid
look I like escargot but also
beachcryptid
snails
Lofwyr
I mean British and American food has lots of weirdness and interesting things, speaking as a non-Brit/American. People just don't see it in their own food
beachcryptid
true! also I will not deny that I find certain northern chinese foods....................VERY STRANGE
beachcryptid
WHO INVENTED STINKY TOFU. WHY.
MRS SEPHIROTH
we do have geoduck so I feel it pans out
beachcryptid
XD
Lel
specifically modern British/American. I collect historic cookbooks, and some of the recipes in there are wild
Lel
one has an entire chapter on cooking wild game, including squirrels
beachcryptid
................I suppose for a hunting society.... (but also, me, today, Ew)

TexMex.
beachcryptid
............what is texmex
beachcryptid
ohhhh
ꎇꂦꋪꍟꌗ꓄ ꈤꌩꂵꉣꃅ
I grew up with all of it and it can be spicy.
beachcryptid
haha makes sense!
Lofwyr
a lot of people from other places consider blood-based dishes weird, to which northern/central/eastern Europeans go ????it tasty????? (or at least: traditional, if not tasty) (northern Europe, reminder, includes the UK)
Lofwyr
or a lot of things that we do with fish
Lofwyr
(or meat) (even countries that do jellied fish tend to consider our jellied meat weird)
Lofwyr
(also England's obsession with suet)
beachcryptid
I mean. blood is fine
beachcryptid
but jellied fish IS odd
Lofwyr
my point really is - if you think your local food has no oddities and traditional unusual ingredients, or your local food tastes bland, maybe your understanding of local food is very limited ...is what I'd say to someone who calls other countries' food odd
Lofwyr
really it just shows they don't know what their own country got
Lofwyr
which sadly is a thing
beachcryptid
true true
beachcryptid
also I keep thinking about those "weird food" lists that go round that are like. 80% asian food
Lofwyr
I feel like that's a lot of... copying from the next list
Lofwyr
like I heard bob call this food weird type
beachcryptid
haha
beachcryptid
my weirdest food is durian, and I can absolutely admit that it is weird (but so tasty)
Lofwyr
my least favourite area specific food is Blockmalz which is malt in candy form and really gross imo. I mean cow brains also used to be a local traditional food, but that kind of ended when crazy cow disease happened. So not sure if to count it any more.
beachcryptid
huh that sounds... really really overly sweet
beachcryptid
and I say all brains should be counted
beachcryptid
/stares at the people who eat monkey brain
Lofwyr
it's like... overly everything, really. (and like a lot of foods of dubious taste it's supposed to be very healthy)
beachcryptid
of course it is....
beachcryptid
I will note NOT to try it if I ever visit
apple thief 🍎
I feel like more weird food lists need lutefisk on it, speaking of northern European and in this specific case nordic cuisine.
apple thief 🍎
it's fish (usually cod) dried & salted and then pickled in lye. then when you want to eat it, you rehydrate it. but the way my dad said our swedish relatives described it was that you take a board, slap a fish on it, salt and dry the fish, slap on some lye, leave it for three months then scrape off the fish and eat the board
beachcryptid
apple thief 🍎 : ......wait. the board?
apple thief 🍎
ahdkfl they'll board thing was a joke! I'm sorry I didnt make that clear.
apple thief 🍎
*the board thing... because of how the fish winds up since you have to soak it in water for a while before it's actually edible again
DoveEaterXC
I've often heard the explanation that the British just never started using seasoning again after wwii rationing lol
DoveEaterXC
and honestly given what prohibition did to American alcohol quality for literally decades I'd buy it
beachcryptid
lol oh XD
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
beachcryptid : STINKY TOFU IS DELICIOUS
beachcryptid
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ : ARE YOU SURE
PirateTaiga
/waves in eastern european/
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I AM VERY SURE
PirateTaiga
pre-communist times polish cuisine was wild
PirateTaiga
(I confirm blood based dishes are a thing still, but a lot less popular now)
beachcryptid
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ : .............very well if I visit I will try
beachcryptid
PirateTaiga : I assume its part of the whole "don't waste" philosopy, but also, I don't... like the taste. Too much iron lol.
PirateTaiga
I tolerate 1 dish like that... and that's tolerate if I must so really won't recommend those ;-)
beachcryptid
haha!
