[health] had an unexpected exchange with a beautician while at the salon this morning. she meant well, but it kinda rubbed me the wrong way
She prefaced it with stuff like "I'm not a doctor" and "I just want people to be healthy"
but while I was getting waxed, she pointed out that I have unusually dark hair on my face
and that there's a bunch of it
and was like, "have you considered getting evaluated for PCOS?"
she followed up by saying her sister-in-law has it, and she feels like it should be talked about more
So I know she meant well
but idk, I'm pretty certain I'm just!! Kinda hairy!!
The hair comes clean off when you wax it. It's not that thick
I'm probably just salty about how any kind of hair on feminine bodies is considered abnormal and so it might've touched a nerve
Pen Again
I mean, not to be nosy, but are your periods particularly painful or irregular and do you have a lot of hormonal acne?
No, my cramps are very minimal. I have a regular period every month
I do have acne. I don't know if it's related to hormones or not. It seems easier to control when my skin is properly hydrated
I haven't had any major breakouts in awhile, just small flare-ups here and there
that I just spot treat, and it's gone
Pen Again
then I wouldn't worry about it. I suspect really it's a case of someone she knew was suffering and maybe she thought she could help and knew some of the symptoms. because menstrual issues are often dismissed
Pen Again
and having been in the position of dealing with ...stuff, it is annoying how little is known about it or discussed. I'm sorry she rubbed you wrong, but I do think she meant well
Oh, I absolutely know she meant well. And I agree it isn't discussed enough. I have co-workers who deal with that kind of stuff, too, and they've vented about there not being enough info on it
But I've also gotten numerous comments about my body hair throughout the years, and it made me tired to hear it again
Pen Again
but you were in a waxing boutique so unwanted hair seems like a reasonable discussion topic
Pen Again
I'm sorry though
Nah, you're right. She deffo meant well, and it's not the same as, like. My landlady doing it
Thanks for the input
Pen Again
yeah that's way out of line for a landlady
Pen Again
sorry. I don't mean it if it came off wrong. you're valid to be annoyed
The beautician was very nice about it! It's also unfortunate that there's an expectation that feminine bodies should be hairless
Both things can be true at the same time, and that's okay
(I was also lowkey anxious that something was wrong with me, in hindsight, so I appreciated the reassurance.)
❄️HAPPY HOLIDAD
I’m over here getting ready to fight
thanks, fam
I don't wanna fight the beautician, but WE CAN SURE FIGHT SOCIETY THO
❄️HAPPY HOLIDAD
OKAY
okay, lol, I changed "weird" to "unexpected" in my TL. because Pen Again is right, the context wasn't inappropriate or strange. It mainly just caught me off guard
god, though. once when I lived in Japan, one of my asshole co-workers saw my arms and said
"I didn't know white women needed to shave their arms."
єgg кηιgнт
mmmm I feel this, my mom's nail salon person used to be like "honey are you happy with your eyebrows?" like implying that I should not be
єgg кηιgнт
out of nowhere, while she was doing my nails
And I was like NOBODY NEEDS TO SHAVE THEIR ARMS
єgg кηιgнт
it's when it adds up in little comments over and over again
єgg кηιgнт
that is rough!!
❄️HAPPY HOLIDAD
y e a h
❄️HAPPY HOLIDAD
the little things just pile up ('8
єgg кηιgнт : ugh, that stuff is annoying. especially in the context of the person trying to sell you services to "fix" something that isn't wrong
❄️HAPPY HOLIDAD : they really do pile up, bleh bleh
Honestly? I think I just inherited whatever body-hair gene my brother ended up with LOL
Because I have the exact same body-hair patterns, just WAY LESS of it because I have less testosterone
when we were kids, we realized we have matching bald spots on our calves, and thought that was the funniest shit ever
bodies are weird, hahah
hella
if you've got dark body hair in general, it makes sense that the hair that's naturally on women's faces would be dark too, especially if it's not any thicker/coarser than most of your other body hair. the hair on women's lips/chins also darkens as we get older.
hella
it's normal stuff and it sucks that society has be like "get rid of it"
hella
i've got dark hair all over, including some on my chest and shoulders, and some of it was from taking testosterone for a while, but also is just because my family has dark body hair in general, and it took a long time for me to be like "whatever i can be hairy"
hella : yes, my body hair in general is just plain dark. if it were a lighter color, fewer people would probably notice it
I'm glad you got to a point where you were like "whatever" about it
hella
yeah sarah's blonde and so no one notices if she doesn't shave for a good while, but back when i still shaved, people would notice within a day or so if i skipped it and people always commented way more frequently because of it
that's so annoying. like, guys!! IT'S JUST HAIR
IT EXISTS. WE KNOW
YOU DON'T NEED TO POINT IT OUT
hella
while i agree the beautician was definitely just trying to be helpful, i think it's really unfortunate that we as a society can't tell the difference between hair that is natural on a lot of women, and hair that may be from a medical issue, because my friends with PCOS definitely have very differently textured facial hair than my friends without
hella
FOR REAL
!!!!! YES, I think you just summarized my feelings. Right there. Damn
hella
EVERYONE HAS IT
hella
WE'RE MAMMALS
Especially this part: i think it's really unfortunate that we as a society can't tell the difference between hair that is natural on a lot of women, and hair that may be from a medical issue
THAT'S what was bugging me, thank you for articulating it better than I could
hella
no problem dude
that's the thing, the beautician was even like, "Your hair isn't textured the same as my clients with PCOS, but you still might want to get evaluated because there's so much of it, and it's dark."
hella
yeeeah that's definitely kind of border lining on being appropriate if she could acknowledge that it's different than her PCOS clients. it's ultimately saying "women having this isn't normal" when it absolutely is.
hella
we all have light colored hair on our faces in youth and as we get older, it definitely darkens, some of it more than others, but it's totally normal on people with darker hair especially
hella
and there's no reason to make people concerned for their health over something that is normal
yeah, she mentioned that she has a much harder time waxing her clients with PCOS. and that my hair was easier to remove in comparison, so maybe it's nothing, but
a few of them are so dark and coarse, so...better safe than sorry!!
if body hair was more normalized, it probably wouldn't have come up, because she'd have seen it before
I wouldn't be surprised if people who get waxed tweeze between appointments
while I've had zero problems letting it grow out, especially since I just wear a mask when I'm out anyways
❄️HAPPY HOLIDAD
raises hand
def used to tweeze my eyebrows in college
❄️HAPPY HOLIDAD
between... getting them waxed
yeah, that makes sense. there's always that awkward period where the edges of your brows have little tiny hair that clashes with the rest of your look, but you don't wanna get waxed again
ngl, one of my favorite things about Seattle is how plenty of women walk around with unshaved armpits and legs. and nobody bats an eye
I wore shorts with unshaved legs about a month ago after a year+ of not shaving, and it felt great
Merry Mothmas
agreed on everything-- the beautician was probably trying to help, but we really need to normalize body hair again
Merry Mothmas
women's illnesses are a pain and should be discussed more.... but so should the inherent fetishized infantilism of a hairless body
Merry Mothmas
i stopped shaving because it's not strictly necessary and I'm not trying to impress anyone. even if I were, shaving is a pain!
𝖒𝖚𝖗𝖉𝖊𝖗 𝖔𝖋 𝖖𝖗𝖔𝖜𝖘
god that coworker tho. they should be grateful you didn’t punch them in the face u_u
Merry Mothmas : it is definitely a pain! I still do it sometimes just because I like how it feels. but yeah, the lack of body hair is definitely tied to infantilism, and I am not here for that
𝖒𝖚𝖗𝖉𝖊𝖗 𝖔𝖋 𝖖𝖗𝖔𝖜𝖘 : she was notorious for put-downs like that. one time she was like "Oh, I noticed you didn't get invited to the Saturday lunch between me and <other co-worker>. She must not want to hang out with you."
Pretty sure it stemmed from crazy-deep insecurity
One time a 12-year-old Japanese child made some offhanded comment about her English, and she could not let it go for 3 days
太宰
yeah I know she meant well but I wish people realized that genetics are just a thing too. my cousin gets a lot of shit bc even though she doesn't have pcos, her and her mother are both tall, broad shouldered, and hairy.
pfle: OH MAN that sucks. idk why people have to comment on stuff like that
太宰
like some people just got different genes, people don't get weird about it even though some guys grow hair like cousin it and others don't
太宰
YEAH it's terrible. people are so thoughtless
they really can be, yeah :/
太宰
I'm sorry you have to deal with that, I agree. And yeah you're 100% right that most people don't really know what it looks , I'd never pretend to
