so, atem's aware this is a horror game, and that another time this happened, the visitors straight up died. he does not believe much he is told about the setting as it interacts with other dimensions. however, he does believe the rift that matter's coming in through is a possible way out, if you can get through it.
he does not think that, on the 4th, all the visitors who don't stay will go home. that's wishful thinking. he thinks kaiba, and a lot of the others, will either be trapped in ryslig or die.
they can't build a machine that'll rip a new hole in reality, but maybe they can put something together that'll get kaiba to the other side of the rift, to whatever's there, where he can -- I dunno if you're familiar with gravity falls, but I'm imagining Ford Pines
atem's been learning engineering from Amanda Sawfranchise; he knows just enough that he won't be completely useless as a second pair of hands -- aha, I see you
but also if he wants to team up and work on that, atem can handle extremely basic engineering but also getting materials/getting info from gods who aren't the fog for the best way to approach
they're both pinning all their hopes and their high opinions of themselves and each other on this mission. one might almost say they have built a pride ship.

listen, now that this atem has been forced by circumstances to become less aloof and removed, he takes cues on what's ok to do to people from what they do

and it's awful because he's a terrible murder gremlin who only knows how to solve problems in one way (penalty game) but the games he puts kaiba through are......in a very twisted way, intended to help
he's not shown anyone any kind of mercy before, he's never like...intended to teach, with a game, until kaiba shows up. but the first penalty game is like "i'm going to have you killed by MTG monsters -- so that you understand the game, and maybe we can play again?? it's fine it's just 1 night of nightmares it's chill"
but i think it's because.....one, he doesn't know kaiba's a reincarnation, but i think there's some kind of recognition there he's not conscious of, and two, kaiba is good at games and that wins him a lot of points

and he's mad! of course he's mad! his friends are in danger! he only put mokuba under penalty game illusions for a day, too, and then mokuba goes and tries to poison them! grandpa's in the hospital! his friends are in danger! atem is scared out of his mind right before the last exodia draw, like, actually legitimately frightened
.......but penalty game 2 is also meant to be Like Therapy, But Magic. it's still a blast of dark magic directly to the brain. it's not good. but, again, when the only tool you have is a hammer
he then spends all of duelist kingdom stanning kaiba hard. shit like "how DARE you make fun of SETO KAIBA, ONE OF THE GREATEST DUELISTS I'VE EVER MET, I'LL KILL YOU MR. PUPPET MAN D<" so that's the canon point my atem's from, where he'll defend kaiba's reputation and memory furiously, he actually got ticked at Noa when they first met because faker
and the stanning only goes away when kaiba shows up and is like "fuck off dweebs i've got other things to worry about and they are more important than you, if you get in my way i won't hesitate" and atem's like "yugi. yugi. let me out. let me talk to him. put me on the phone yugi" so he can be like KAIBA YOU DICK
meanwhile in 'unrelated to all these bitches' land I'm kicking my leggies bc yeah I saw loki all up in that but I didn't know mobius apped in too so here I am with my crops getting watered and my face clearing up
