something I love is when something in a series created by limitations or mistakes becomes an iconic core part of the series appeal
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7313608-medium40087281.gif)
Quinneapolis
we were juts talking about the Varia Suit in Metroid originally being a mistranslation of Barrier Suit
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7313608-medium40087281.gif)
Quinneapolis
but I'm watching Ultraman
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7313608-medium40087281.gif)
Quinneapolis
and there's this like super famous element of its combat scenes
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7313608-medium40087281.gif)
Quinneapolis
where Ultraman's giant battle form has a three-minute timer
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7313608-medium40087281.gif)
Quinneapolis
and when it runs low its chest gem starts flickering and it's always a big suspense beat
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7313608-medium40087281.gif)
Quinneapolis
and the reason this was introduced
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7313608-medium40087281.gif)
Quinneapolis
is that the kaiju fights were expensive to film
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7313608-medium40087281.gif)
Quinneapolis
so they came up with an in-universe justification to keep them short
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8252769-medium50317069.gif)
Rama
Speaking of Ultraman, Evangelion TV wouldn't be half as good without all the long-focus, eternally-held still shots that only exist because they ran out of money immediately.
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7313608-medium40087281.gif)
Quinneapolis
yeah Evangelion is a perfect case study in turning "we have no money" into "actually this is really deep and artistic"

don't the evas have a similar sort of power limiter due to anno's ultraman fixation

god. I used to think all the long held shots of Eva where basically Planned and Very Deep so ofc we get no dialogue. (I learned better, but still....)
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7343566-medium6.gif)
Rival Fenix
or little dialogue. XD
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7313608-medium40087281.gif)
Quinneapolis
watching anime where esoteric scenery pans or weird camera angles happen during dialogue scenes: "this is so artistic-looking"
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7313608-medium40087281.gif)
Quinneapolis
making the same anime: "we don't have time to do mouth flaps for this scene"
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7411940-medium53106982.gif)
Gabiluzbad
Financial constraints on animation leading to long dramatic still shots is one of the central aspects of the anime artistic movement
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7313608-medium40087281.gif)
Quinneapolis
anime's whole look is based on using every trick you can to cut corners in unimportant scenes
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7313608-medium40087281.gif)
Quinneapolis
so that you can go all out in important scenes
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7411940-medium53106982.gif)
Gabiluzbad
Is true

That exact thing hurt the eva experience for me, unfortunately. I could tell immediately that it was corner-cutting so it just became extremely frustrating for me.
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7313608-medium40087281.gif)
Quinneapolis
I don't hold corner-cutting against eva, they were making that show under absurd time constraints with couch change
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7085887-medium52103407.gif)
EsperBot
I don't know about holding it against it exactly, but it destroyed the illusion of artistic intention that makes it not-boring for most people

AzureChrysanthemum
I feel like cost-saving measures aren't inherently themselves in-artistic. You can make artistic designs that also work within budget constraints - I'm sure all those held shots were chosen quite intentionally which is why they generally worked

the enemy of art is the absence of limitations, as some homie once said

dragon time
The best season of Xena is season two where Lucy Lawless broke her pelvis falling off a horse and they had to get extremely creative while she healed up

At least one bodyswap ep, a beauty pageant ep where she was undercover, a few where she was dead and Gabrielle had to Patroclus it

Electric Guitars weren't supposed to sound like that
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7411940-medium53106982.gif)
Gabiluzbad
They were just supposed to sound like accoustic guitars, but louder
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7313608-medium40087281.gif)
Quinneapolis
oh that's interesting
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7411940-medium53106982.gif)
Gabiluzbad
The sound of an electric guitar is the sound of an amplifier failing to contain the sound of a regular guitar
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7411940-medium53106982.gif)
Gabiluzbad
Just like 8-bit NES music sounds like it does because they didn't have the technology to make it sound better but now that style of beeps and chirps is a distinct musical style
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7313608-medium40087281.gif)
Quinneapolis
the reason so many NES game soundtracks developed such iconic melodies was because you didn't really have enough sound channels for more than a melody
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7411940-medium53106982.gif)
Gabiluzbad
I remember some clickbait video I watched that was titled "Why do old games have better music than modern games"
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/7411940-medium53106982.gif)
Gabiluzbad
And the answer was "Have you HEARD modern games? This question is baloney"
