Here's a question for fighting game people
Quinnfernal
What's the difference between a 'grab' and a 'command grab'
DIE!Ba Nana
Not anywhere near fighting game expert, but regular grabs have the fighter grab someone from only movement or standstill. Depending on the game you usually have some control on where or how you throw them. Sometimes you get a pummel.

Grab is a baked in common sort of grab like. You have a grab button, or a button that grabs under a particular condition.

Command grab is one you have to input a command to execute. Grapplers often will have command grabs on top of the game’s vanilla grab/throw.

That’s always been my understanding at least.
DIE!Ba Nana
Uhhhh yeah that
DIE!Ba Nana
Also command grabs tend to work in the air more often than regular grabs.

Often regular grabs just DON’T work in the air.

yeah command grab is literally just "a grab with a custom/special input"
EsperBot
A grab is a universal mechanic all characters have. Any character can run up and hit someone with an unblockable throw move for a bit of damage. This is the case in pretty much all fighting games because otherwise blocking would be way too strong.
EsperBot
In addition, you can generally defend against someone trying to throw you with your own throw. This is called breaking or teaching the throw.
Quinnfernal
I'm guessing that's an autocorrect of teching
EsperBot
Yes.
EsperBot
Command throws are moves that function like throws, bypassing blocking and knocking the enemy down, but are character specific, requiring the input of a special move command. In general they deal big damage and/or put the opponent in a dangerous situation on wakeup, but leave you very vulnerable if you miss them.
EsperBot
They may have special properties as well, like being able to grab out of the air or launching the opponent so you can follow up with juggles.
EsperBot
Command grabs generally cannot be teched.
EsperBot
A rarer case is something like Makoto or Yun’s command grabs, which deal little to no damage, but instead set them up to follow up with a big damage combo.
EsperBot
But yeah I’m general it’s any ability that acts like a throw that is outside of the universal throw mechanic.
Quinnfernal
anyway I'm watching woolie play Strive and my favorite thing about it is that brief moment of air to air combat during scene transitions
