Where Is Harkan
[Lancer] It's that time again! Tonight, we're talking about various minor factions
Where Is Harkan
Where Is Harkan
Where Is Harkan
Where Is Harkan
Where Is Harkan
I've at least referred to most of the major powers in the Lancerverse
Where Is Harkan
Union, Karrakis, Harrison Armory, etc
Where Is Harkan
Here's some of the smaller ones that are still cool:
Where Is Harkan
Sparr
Where Is Harkan
Sparr is a planet that was colonized by one of the ten generation ships and it probably shouldn't have been.
Where Is Harkan
The leading theory is that the colony ship got knocked off course during it's journey and ended up having to course correct to the nearest star system before all the colonists died
Where Is Harkan
Sparr is a brutal world of ice and snow and the surface is only technically habitable
Where Is Harkan
What the colony ship arrived, it crash landed
Where Is Harkan
So the colonists had no hope to pack back up and choose a more pleasant world
Where Is Harkan
And also they lost most of their advanced technology in the crash. They barely survived at all
Where Is Harkan
But they did, in a sort of loose network of clans that barely managed an iron age civilization
Where Is Harkan
The Sparri people are kind of a fusion of like
Where Is Harkan
Inuit and Viking cultures
Where Is Harkan
They spent ~1500 years fighting amongst themselves until Union found them, but even that didn't go great
Where Is Harkan
Since the Union scout ship ALSO crashlanded
Where Is Harkan
The dazed and injured crew were killed by Sparri warriors, but the ship's NHP, Prudent Interval, made a hail mary play and went for impersonating a goddess to survive
Where Is Harkan
They claimed that the Union soldiers had been demons, crueling holding them from their people, and asked to be brought to their capital so they could properly guide their people
Where Is Harkan
Under the guidance of Prudent Interval the goddess Ynneval, the Sparri people advanced QUITE quickly, eventually forming a society where the clans were ruled by an elite priesthood, which was in turn ruled by an NHP that was getting more and more cascaded as the years passed
lily!
okay fine you've sold me i've posted to the interest check
Where Is Harkan
Around 4000u, Union made another attempt to make contact. By this point the NHP FULLY believed her cover story, and declared the new arrivals to be more demons
Where Is Harkan
Unfortunately for her, the "Demons" arrived with machine guns and laser rifles so the iron age Sparri couldn't do shit to them. Fighting was over in a matter of days and Ynnerval/Prudent Interval was destroyed
Where Is Harkan
Sparr was brought into Union and, unexpectedly, they took to it like a duck to water
Where Is Harkan
By 5016u, there are actually less Sparri on Sparr than there are off world
Where Is Harkan
They're an adventurous people who are known for being unmatched warriors who prefer to die in battle.
Where Is Harkan
That's a stereotype, but there ARE a lot of Sparri mercenary companies out there who have a reputation for being excellent melee fighters
lily!
Does that rep translate to frame piloting ability?
Where Is Harkan
Sometimes
Where Is Harkan
They're not like ACTUALLY a race of super warriors but their culture values bravery and curiosity so they often do end up as fighters and explorers
Where Is Harkan
They're also known for their long standing agreement to be bodyguards for the
Where Is Harkan
Voladores
Where Is Harkan
The Voladores are a nomadic people who live mostly on travelling city ships. They are famous for two things
Where Is Harkan
- Being excellent merchants and traders
Where Is Harkan
- Being mysterious as all get out
Where Is Harkan
They don't use the omninet and do all their trading in person, but it's generally agreed upon that if you want to find something that no one else can find, you can probably get it from the Voladores
Where Is Harkan
They live in matrilinial communities, usually on convoys of spaceships, they are wierdly tall, they never take off their full body environment suits, and they never invite outsiders into their communities
Where Is Harkan
(With the exception of their Sparri bodyguards)
Where Is Harkan
I can't say much about the Voladores because, honestly, not much is known about them
Where Is Harkan
What we DO know is that they have a home, somewhere, that they refer to as High Ground
Where Is Harkan
Is it a planet? Is it a gigantic city ship? Is it a space station hiding entirely in blinkspace? Does it orbit a black hole?
Where Is Harkan
No one fucking knows
Where Is Harkan
Except the Voladores
Where Is Harkan
And they're not telling
Where Is Harkan
They have an "embassy" in the Cradle system but really all it is is a glorified answering machine that they check occasionally.
Where Is Harkan
SecComm's massive wave of expansion was made possible in part by buying star charts of inhabitable planets from the Voladores, but then SecComm tried to force them to integrate into Union's culture and they all just quietly vanished from Union's territory until after the rise of ThirdComm
Where Is Harkan
The Ungratefuls
Where Is Harkan
Are a rebel movement within the Karrakin Trade Baronies
Where Is Harkan
And to introduce them, I am going to share with you
Where Is Harkan
Where Is Harkan
Karrakis is RICH
Where Is Harkan
Like they have SO much fucking money you cannot believe
Where Is Harkan
(The guy talking there refers to "manna" which is the official currency that Union uses and is generally accepted just about everywhere in the galaxy)
Where Is Harkan
And they got that wealth the same way rich people have always gotten wealth
Where Is Harkan
by grinding people to dust in the gears of industry and labor
Where Is Harkan
And now some of the people are sick of it
Where Is Harkan
the name of their movement started as Karrakin propaganda
Where Is Harkan
"These people are UNGRATEFUL for all the good we have done for them!"
Where Is Harkan
And the rebels were like "YOU BET YOUR ASS WE'RE UNGRATEFUL"
Where Is Harkan
And the name stuck
Where Is Harkan
Their headquarters is on Free Sanjak, formerly Ludra's World and a Baronic stronghold
Where Is Harkan
Which is perpetually under Baronic blockade
Where Is Harkan
Ungratefuls work in cells, which all have their own goals
Where Is Harkan
some cells sneak out into Baronic factories and farms and mines and organize the workers
Where Is Harkan
some cells run classes that teach people about the wider world and how they're being exploited
Where Is Harkan
and some cells, of course, attack Baronic assets directly
Where Is Harkan
They don't have a uniform or anything like that but they seem to be fond of the color sky blue
Where Is Harkan
The color of the sky they could never see while trapped deep in the mines
Where Is Harkan
The Ungratefuls also apparently have some kind of tie with HORUS
Where Is Harkan
Their insurgents use HORUS mechs a lot
Where Is Harkan
the Ungratefuls are very suspicious about Union, which they see as an enabler of Karrakis, but Union is apparently none the less trying to slip agents in to help the Ungratefuls out on the down low, because Union is NOT wild about how the Barons do business
Where Is Harkan
Despite them being ostensibly allies
Where Is Harkan
The Albatross
Where Is Harkan
I mentioned them briefly a few plurks ago
lily!
something i've noticed about lancer that works REALLY well is that there are a bajillion different ways to hook your characters into a common organization that has a bunch of different campaign hooks built in
lily!
it's an amazingly designed tabletop world
Where Is Harkan
It's great
Where Is Harkan
The Albatross is an order of relativistic knights who are known for sailing between the stars at relativistic speeds, endlessly chasing calls for help.
Where Is Harkan
They seem immortal to normal people because of time dialation
Where Is Harkan
A two hundred year long patrol might only be five subjective years to the knights
Where Is Harkan
They specialize in rapid surgical strikes designed to break an enemy as quickly as possible
Where Is Harkan
And they're generally considered to be some of the best fighters in the galaxy
Where Is Harkan
Each Albatross wing is able to deploy usually around 200 mech chassis, along with squads of heavy infantry and medium sized subline attack ships, and each has a monastery HQ somewhere that is staying more or less in step with real time
Where Is Harkan
A place that never changes that elderly knights can return to to retire
Where Is Harkan
and train the next generation of initiates
Where Is Harkan
If anyone was just 1000% unequivocally the Heroes
Where Is Harkan
It's the Albatross
Where Is Harkan
AND THEN ON THE OTHER END OF THINGS
Where Is Harkan
you have the Mirrorsmoke Mercenary Company
Where Is Harkan
MSMC is one of the largest mercenary companies in the galaxy. They'll hire anyone who can sign their name and they'll do any job that they can get a Union official to sign off on as not a war crime.
Where Is Harkan
Mirrorsmoke members get their past scrubbed from the record and become new people, often going by a callsign and abandoning their old name (especially if their old name had a few bounties or warrants out for it)
Where Is Harkan
A lot of their missions have a kind of shaky legality about them, and that's why MSMC employs some of the best lawyers in the galaxy
Where Is Harkan
While MSMC mercenaries have a reputation of being a step above the bottom of the barrel
Where Is Harkan
MSMC lawyers have a reputation for being the most ruthless and cutthroat firms you can get
Where Is Harkan
From the book:
Where Is Harkan
MSMC’s pilots and troopers bear the unfortunate nickname, “the garbage men of the galaxy”.
Where Is Harkan
The nicknames given to the company’s lawyers are much worse
Where Is Harkan
My players in the Lancer campaign I am CURRENTLY running are an MSMC team
Where Is Harkan
God what should I talk about next
Where Is Harkan
Maybe I'll just give a quick and dirty run down of every single PC mech frame
Where Is Harkan
That sounds suitably insane
Where Is Harkan
For now, though, that's enough
Where Is Harkan
If there are any I'm forgetting, I'm sure they're not very important .
