you know what... I really enjoy the popularity of 'whomst' and its assorted derivative non-words
skerple
not only are they fun to say, but I enjoy the linguistic function they serve in conveying the tone of the question
CRUSTACEAN KING
agreed
skerple
"how the fuck" and "howmst the fuck" are different questions
skerple
and I think that's beautiful
103 FOOLS
I'm also fond of 'nani the fuck'
skerple
also very good
skerple
another fun thing with whomst, that doesn't seem to carry over to the derivatives as much
skerple
if somebody asks you about another person, and you say "who?"
it is reasonably expected that you actually don't know and are asking sincerely
skerple
if, in the same situation, you say "whomst?"
skerple
you are saying you definitely know and are being deliberately disingenuous, such as to humorously disregard that person
Ain'tpril
Me too
103 FOOLS
if there's anything that's great about this generation and/or the internet, it's that we've basically invented our own variant of English just to make up for lack of tone over the internet and it's beautiful
skerple
god yeah it's amazing
skerple
I've been reading Because Internet by Gretchen McCulloch and it's a really fun look at that
skerple
there's a whole chapter making the case, in detail, that emoji caught on because they are the best replacement we've come up with for the way we gesture while talking
103 FOOLS
oh man I hadn't even thought of that
Ain'tpril
I keep having the thought that like, newspeak was presented as like, oh no the HORROR when we read 1984 in freshman year or whatever but more and more I'm all for "doubleplus ungood"
Ain'tpril
The other day I bungled saying something and followed up with "act like that was better good English" and you know what, that is EXACTLY what I wanted to convey
Infychu
pffffft
Ain'tpril
(we didn't talk much about the dictatorship aspect of newspeak much in HS I mostly remember the smug superiority of the 9th grade grammar police of which I was definitely one)
skerple
hoo boy same
FETCH ⚔
ME TOO
FETCH ⚔
now, fuckst that
Infychu
Huh, I think my class was the mirror of that. We didn't get the grammar police angle, only the "This is being used to limit your ability to describe anything with any nuance, and thus limit your ability to think with any nuance." angle.
Ain'tpril
I have begun to suspect my childhood education was not very good
Ain'tpril
But yeah I guess in my usage the newspeak doesn't replace being able to speak with nuance, it is iust one further nuance itself
skerple
exactly
Infychu
Right
Infychu
That's what would be ideal anyway
