Complicated. in the books his mom seems to be a stay-at-home housewife who does not quite get her kid, and doesn't believe that his accidentally breaking his glasses wasn't his fault. the movies don't actually say shit-all about her unless you buy that she accompanied him to Stan's disaster Bar Mitzvah

the obituary prop hints that Richie's parents wouldn't have been too pleased if he had come out to them, but that was made up by It, so it's likely the clown was just playing on Richie's fears

in my opinion it's more of - she does love her kid, but she fundamentally does not understand him, and also she's too busy! it's 1989, the number of women in the workplace has ballooned from the 1950s, it's likely that she and Wentworth are distant from Richie simply bc they're away too often

she and Wentworth likely displayed 80s-typical attitudes towards gay people, at best being "hate the sin love the sinner" types

there's no indication she survives until 2016 in the movie timeline, so I'm inclined to believe Maggie and Wentworth have likely died in the interim

also they lived in Derry. it's just.........land of bad parenting

Joyce is herself a mom!! but her own mom is a mystery to us. we know Joyce was born sometime in the 40s, likely in 1945 or later

so her mom would've lived through WWII and it's not out of the blue that she would've married, like, a high school sweetheart who went to war

maybe she had Joyce young - at 18-20 or so!

we know Joyce was something of a rebel in her high school years so I figure her mom was a disciplinarian and her dad was likely either ineffective or just plain out of the picture. I imagine Joyce and her mom had a lot of friction and that Lonnie likely was not someone she approved of, which made him appealing to a rebellious Joyce

of course that didn't end well. I do also think that in many ways Joyce's parenting style is significantly different from her mother's - more encouragement, less focus on discipline. she does get overprotective in s2 but like, her son disappeared the last year so she has a reason!

Jessica's mom went from a suburban housewife to a super-strong metahuman in s2. unfortunately she is also not the most stable person. Jessica is having a really rough time

and the less we talk about Dorothy Walker the better bc Jessica and Dorothy do NOT have the best relationship
