https://images.plurk.com/7LD7F8dTUe3M5mk6YsbDQt.jpg no listen this is really very simple
فك يو
if it has packaging that says it requires refrigeration = refrigerator
فك يو
if it has packaging that a mouse could chew through = refrigerator
bluecanary
wait for real? like chips?
bluecanary
like cereal?
فك يو
oh yeah i absolutely put chips and cereal in the fridge
فك يو
i haven't seen a mouse inside the house in 5+ years but i'm taking no chances, those fuckers still live in my walls
SPOILER ALERT
you're not using it as a refrigerator so much as a lock box
فك يو
exactly
MOVED ⭐
I put cereal in airtight containers but I put bread and pastries in the fridge or freezer yeah
SPOILER ALERT
oh no you shouldn't refrigerate bread items! they'll dry out
فك يو
oh airtight containers would be a good idea actually
SPOILER ALERT
freezing works well but if you're putting bread in the fridge you gotta make sure it's wrapped super tight
فك يو
that's good to know!
MOVED ⭐
nods!! I only get a half loaf and I can rehydrate easy, it just helps it from molding which is embarrassingly fast where I live
SPOILER ALERT
oh... no, the internet says it's not the air, it's the temperature
MOVED ⭐
nods
Cirape
i, too, use the refridgerator to keep pests out. no mice but have had various bugs and fucking roaches
SPOILER ALERT
weird! I wouldn't think crystalization would be an issue at low temps but not freezing
SPOILER ALERT
sorry this is irrelevant I just get excited about chemistry
فك يو
Cirape god yeah i had dry goods beetles one year; they probably rode in via a bag of dog food
SPOILER ALERT
they do make plastic containers specifically for cereal
فك يو
SPOILER ALERT not irrelevant; feel free to continue to get excited!! i didn't know any of this so this is interesting (i also rarely buy bread, but)
SPOILER ALERT
I'm real sensitive to cold though so I'm probably more horrified than I should be
SPOILER ALERT
frozen cake is amazing though
فك يو
as in ice cream cake or cake cake that's been frozen
SPOILER ALERT
as in cake cake!
فك يو
HUH
SPOILER ALERT
I made my birthday cake last a good 6 months
MOVED ⭐
the refrigerator WILL make it go stale faster, but wrapping the stale slices in a wet paper towel and nuking it in a microwave for about 4 or 5 seconds fixes that in a pinch, and I would rather have stale bread than molded bread
SPOILER ALERT
you have to slice it first
فك يو
oooooooh also good to know
SPOILER ALERT
one site I found actually suggests putting it under running water
SPOILER ALERT
it seems to be more about homemade/bakery bread though
MOVED ⭐
but again thats just my living situation if I could keep it out at room temp without it molding within like three days I would in a heartbeat
SPOILER ALERT
pro tip: if you cut up chocolate cake and freeze the slices individually you can just eat it straight from the wrap
MOVED ⭐
yesss frozen cakes and bars
SPOILER ALERT
it's probably better if you let it thaw and maybe warm it a little, but chomping on partly-frozen cake is amazing
Moulin_Hearts
We freeze bread and cookies. Eating a thawed cookie gets the texture of a cake pop/dough but it’s fully baked! And I like putting chips and cereals and such in clear air tight containers. Stay fresh longer and you can keep track of how much you have easier as well.
SPOILER ALERT
just the thought of frozen-bread sandwiches makes my teeth hurt
bluecanary
fridge cereal is sending my brain to hell
bluecanary
cereal boxes are so god damn big... fridge space is valuable...
Moulin_Hearts
We have half the apples in the fridge and half not cause my sister doesn’t like cold fruit
فك يو
LMAO if it helps i also rarely by cereal
فك يو
and when i do the boxes are generally thin enough that they can fit sideways on the door shelf
SPOILER ALERT
does refrigerating chips change their taste? it seems like it would
Dragons Dragons
Yeah, I only ever put cold things and condiments (not spices) in the fridge. But I've never had to worry about mice, either... though I did have bees once.
فك يو
not in my experience, though when i do buy chips i buy small bags and go through them quickly
فك يو
a large bag that i was trying to store long-term might go differently, idk
SPOILER ALERT
..............bees, like, inside?
فك يو
Moulin_Hearts
Thin mints go in the fridge. Period. End of discussion.
SPOILER ALERT
that's even scarier than frozen bread
فك يو
chocolate 100% goes in the fridge
فك يو
candy in general but chocolate especially
Tᴀᴛᴇʀs.
Thin mints go in the freezer!
Mica
They sell these great airtight plastic things
Mica
They're about the size and dimensions of a cereal box. You just put your cereal into them, and then you don't have to worry about mice.
فك يو
oh man you guys have been saying thin mints and i just realized i've been picturing andes mints and those are different
SPOILER ALERT
they have a little spout opening too
Mica
Yeah, they're really neat
فك يو
but now i'm craving frozen andes mints
Tᴀᴛᴇʀs.
Cereal goes in reusable plastic containers with a reclosable hole on top. And I live in a dry climate so bread can go on top of the fridge
فك يو
and i use those containers for bird food! a+ do recommend
SPOILER ALERT
mmm that does sound nice
Mica
Yes, bread goes in the bread basket on top of the fridge
Tᴀᴛᴇʀs.
Dog food is too much/too big to go in the fridge but we have a lockable plastic tub with a lid we keep it in
Mica
Cans go in the pantry, as do unopened bottles of ketchup and maple syrup, and that sort of thing
SPOILER ALERT
I cannot allow maple syrup in the fridge
SPOILER ALERT
clean the container with soap and water if you have to
Mica
Once you open them, they need refrigerated, but fridge space is at a premium
SPOILER ALERT
but no. no.
Mica
I mean, mold
Mica
but to each their own
Tᴀᴛᴇʀs.
Yeah stuff like peanut butter/jelly etc starts out in the pantry but once it's open it's the fridge for it
Tᴀᴛᴇʀs.
If the yogurt is in the tubes it's also in the freezer
Tᴀᴛᴇʀs.
If you're shopping for two weeks and you get multiple loaves of bread, the loaves you haven't opened yet go in the freezer
Tᴀᴛᴇʀs.
(young kid in the house and working from home means a buttload of sandwiches)
SPOILER ALERT
I've never had any problems with maple syrup molding
Tᴀᴛᴇʀs.
I think it depends on the ingredients in the syrup, if something is just pure maple syrup I don't think it molds easily but if it's sweetened with corn syrup or cane sugar, that's what molds
SPOILER ALERT
actually the internet says that pure maple syrup needs to be refrigerated but store-bought doesn't
Tᴀᴛᴇʀs.
Interesting
SPOILER ALERT
because preservatives
SPOILER ALERT
also, pure maple syrup is mostly just sugar to start with
فك يو
climate probably plays a role there too, i'd guess
Tᴀᴛᴇʀs.
what I'm learning is I'd lose an assload of food to rot if I didn't live in Colorado
SPOILER ALERT
yeah, bacteria and mold grow easily in moist environments
SPOILER ALERT
my maple syrup straight up says "refrigeration not required"
SPOILER ALERT
it also has an absurd amount of added sugar for what was basically pure sugar water to start with
𝖕𝖚𝖟𝖟𝖑𝖊𝖉𝖊𝖙𝖊𝖈𝖙𝖎𝖛𝖊
peanut butter stays in the cabinet, even after opening--fats and oils do not mold easily. same reason butter can sit out in a dish forever
𝖕𝖚𝖟𝖟𝖑𝖊𝖉𝖊𝖙𝖊𝖈𝖙𝖎𝖛𝖊
since mold needs moisture and fats repel water
MOVED ⭐
I refrigerate my peanut butter but only because it recommends it on the package, I get the kind thats literally just peanuts and nothing else so its shelf life isn't as good
Tᴀᴛᴇʀs.
MOVED ⭐ : yessss that kind is so good
MOVED ⭐
nods, doesn't spread as well but I love the taste
𝖕𝖚𝖟𝖟𝖑𝖊𝖉𝖊𝖙𝖊𝖈𝖙𝖎𝖛𝖊
that's fair--i think i used to get that kind when it was something i had access to, but now it's just Jiffy peanut butter
Lightning Bolt
refrigerated peanut butter just tastes better
Jay
cake actually improves with freezing, and it's a standard part of fancy cake decorating to freeze it between stages, but cookies and bread go stale but can be easily refreshed
Ziri✖O
Yeah bread goes in the fridge or your breads and bagels and things will be absolutely riddled with mold in less than a week out here
فك يو
this plurk is fascinating to me because most of the things mentioned in here are things i don't typically buy, so i'm turning this into a hypothetical thought exercise
فك يو
"would i refrigerate peanut butter???*
فك يو
(my diet in terms of what i cook is like. 95% some combination of pasta/rice/eggs/veggies/fruit/ground meat)
فك يو
(my diet in terms of what i don't cook is Too Much Takeout)
bluecanary
I eat cereal at least once a day. life has many cereals ed boy
فك يو
what cereal do you recommend
bluecanary
special k does a version that has freeze dried strawberries in it that's my personal fave
bluecanary
but this is all because when I cook I get hurt
bluecanary
I've cut myself on things like pears
no knife just pear
فك يو
OH NO did you get a pear splinter....
bluecanary
just a cut but ... always battle wounds from food
Lady Stardust
bluecanary I have a twenty-year old scar on my hand I got from a dead pheasant when I hauled it out of my freezer
bluecanary
ow
BethampHATamine
/is a gross heathen. Refrigerates almost nothing. Freezer or table, pick one.
