[Musicals] To celebrate Easter, Iโ€™m gonna share a few studio recordings from a Korean production of Jesus Christ Superstar
And by โ€œa few recordingsโ€ I mean โ€œdifferent versions of the same three songsโ€ because theyโ€™re all I can find
And I will give opinions on them as someone with no knowledge of theater production in general, or the show itself specifically ๐Ÿ™ƒ
Iโ€™m just someone watching and listening, and commenting how I see and hear the performance
So! First up is three different performances of โ€œHeaven on Their Mindsโ€ by the Judas actors
I really like this one. Thereโ€™s something about the performance that feels a little sarcastic, and kind of gives off an air of disdain
I think he is the one who played Judas more frequently? I saw him in a few different videos. But his performance has a lot of attitude, and it feels like heโ€™s a little angrier than the previous Judas
It also feels like heโ€™s more exasperated
A strong, straightforward performance. Itโ€™s fine. He doesnโ€™t have a lot of emotion or inflection as the other two Judasโ€™ other than where he needs to, so itโ€™s not as interesting to me? Although it does give off the impression that heโ€™s just 100% done
Next weโ€™ve got โ€œI Donโ€™t Know How to Love Himโ€ from the Mary Magdaleneโ€™s
Another good, straightforward performance. She has a lot of heart, but like Hyung-ryulโ€™s Judas she doesnโ€™t have a lot of different inflection, so she doesnโ€™t stand out as much to me
She has a much more dynamic performance. She starts off soft in the beginning, and as the music swells her voice grows and you can feel her frustration
Her performance isnโ€™t as vocally strong as the other two, but hers is more nuanced, I feel. Sheโ€™s much softer, kind of gentle, and you can really feel her uncertainty about her situation
Especially near the end of the song, her words are almost breathless as she tries to imagine what she might do or feel, and you really get how lost she seems
And last but not least, weโ€™ve got โ€œGesthemane (I Just Want to Say)โ€ by the Jesusโ€™
Thereโ€™s only two versions, because I guess there were only two actors that portrayed him
Heโ€™s kinda prolific in Korean theater, from what I can tell? And heโ€™s really good. You can feel the sadness and fear, as well as his acceptance for his death near the end of the song
His performance is more frustrated and angry, and maybe even a little resentful. You can feel his sadness near the end of the song too, but his feels less like acceptance for death and more like heโ€™s given up
From what I read, Michael is actually Korean-American, and Korean isnโ€™t his first language. This recording is actually his second time heโ€™s been Jesus in a Korean production for JCS, so heโ€™s gotten a better handle on the song
I think I really like Michaelโ€™s performance though because I grew up watching the 70s movie of JCS, and this performance really gives me a Ted Neeley vibe
Then again, I could be wrong about everything, because what do I know?
Anyway, thanks for letting me ramble on
