I still remember the author that went on a huge screed about how the Death of Gwen Stacy left her feeling alienated as a "quirky, smart, nerdy blonde." Which made me doubletake because Gwen hadn't been quirky or nerdy over the course of the comics.

She started off as the ideal Objectivist girlfriend, intelligent, domineering, and sort of mean. She WANTED Peter Parker and was going to get him. Heck, Steve Ditko drew her berets like little devil horns. Then Ditko left and Stan Lee and John Romita Sr softened the HELL out of her.
