Chiyo
Over the weekend I sent out an update of a previous release through my vendor system to people who have purchased that item in the past. LL marked it as spam and temp suspended my account for less than a day. Today I finally got confirmation from a Linden that it was indeed these updates that was considered spam. Lesson: don't send out updates automatically.
Chiyo
Apparently the system sent out 3-4 messages per person with the update. I had one update, then a second one to fix a script issue. Should be 2 messages max but apparently wasn't.
Chiyo
I put redelivery terminals all over the place in my main store. No more sending auto updates. I can't create if my account is suspended.
✴Sparkling✴
that is ridiculous
Chiyo
It took 3 tickets with LL, a live chat session with LL support, and one ticket to the vendor system to narrow down what the issue was. LL refused to give me adequate info until I pressed for it after days of struggling.
Chiyo
Also apparently there wasn't enough info on how customers can opt-out of these messages. It could be that I need to add text in the update message about opting out.
Chiyo
But anyway that's a summary of what happened. This is why I'm not going to be sending any automatic updates to customers anymore, at least for now.
Nimil
are you doing this with a personal script? caspervend's updates give you a link that tells you that you can opt out when you send through their update system
Chiyo
Nimil : it was through caspervend update systsem
Chiyo
I confirmed I used it correctly. This was all still the result for whatever reason.
Nimil
have you let casper know?? he is really strict about no spam with his system, knowing that LL flagged it like that seems like something he'd be right on fixing
Chiyo
I did let him know.
Chiyo
I'm not sure what triggered LL to take action. I really don't know. Been just trying to fix it and move forward so this doesn't happen again.
Nimil
people AR'ing your stuff as spam probably
Chiyo
probably. it's what I assume. still don't know for sure.
Nimil
i saw someone in a group chat asking what a message was the other day (someone elses update to them) and someone told them it was spam and not to receive it even though it was a real caspervend sent update
Chiyo
so if me sending updates to people is bad then I won't send updates. I set up redeliveries all over so people can come get updates themselves whenever they want. that will have to do for now.
Nimil
people jump to conclusions without even thinking. i've been IM'ed and yelled at for "spam" when i was just sending an update
Nimil
yeah better safe than sorry
Chiyo
don't know what else to do. getting suspended isn't going to help anyone.
potato boyo
I think it speaks to people's mindset about SL in general. if the default feeling is distrust, they must feel the environment isn't safe.
potato boyo
ie too much real spam/distrust of LL to protect them and their accounts.
potato boyo
also a side effect of the larger internet culture of being overwhelmed and undereducated, sensibly distrusting the unknown. the internet is scary.
potato boyo
SL should be safer. that's up to LL if they want to foster a different attitude in people inworld
potato boyo
idk I just woke up.
Allegory
Chiyo : people freaking out about updates as spam is why i only do automatic updates by hand personally- AND rename the object with UPDATE first. that seems to work (it's tedious as fuck and takes forever) but people will freak out and report deciding it's not legit otherwise.
Allegory
potato boyo : i blame a fair amount of it on the credit scammers, who hang out in popular stores and off "free credit" to people who show up (that will train their L- it has to ask for perms, but so does anything money related), so people are paranoid about attaching/rezzing ANYTHING they did not actively get themselves.
potato boyo
Yeah. that speaks to the unsafe environment situation.
Allegory
potato boyo : i 100% agree. LL uses the permissions system to give themselves cover on it- but this has been going on for years and continues to go on, and they have not provided any real solution to it.
Nimil
Allegory : i had someone cuss me out about hand delivery an item to them in the past lol they forgot they purchased it. they thought i was spamming people with the object at the club they worked at.
Allegory
Nimil : that's why i also name it with UPDATE in the beginning! basically, yeah, don't send updates out unless you HAVE to, let people get that themselves and if they don't, welp, that's on them, sorry.

as someone who purchased said item, i only believe i got two messages from you
