anybody can have bland cropped short slightly messy black hair

but the thing is

gudako's side ponytail implies a level of active choice

putting your hair up from the back is practical but putting it up from the side implies "you know what, i'm going to be silly and start doing this"

and using an eye-catching scrunchie specifically to call attention to it only adds to the effect
