Can someone out there please explain the difference between an apartment and a condo? Because it's just confusing to me. I don't know if we don't have condos here or if we just call everything 'flats'

apartments are, in real estate terms, a collective single unit. Condos can be bought and sold individually
✨Rikkai Trash✨
so you don't buy an apartment. You can rent a single apartment living space or buy the whole damn complex
✨Rikkai Trash✨
you can technically rent a condo too, but most people purchase
Rokesmith
Okay. So apartments are generally rented and condos are privately owned. No wonder I've been so confused all this time
✨Rikkai Trash✨
correct. Structurally, there is not really a difference.
Rokesmith
Thank you. Like I said, in this country they're mostly just 'flats'
Rokesmith
Sometimes I admit we do use 'apartment' for the posher ones, but those can be either rented or owned, and in that case it's probably just the US/French language influence
✨Rikkai Trash✨
no problem! Yeah it does sound like a usage difference, or maybe a legal one? Can you both buy and rent flats?
Rokesmith
Yep. My sister owns her flat (I think) but the one Laila and I used to live in was rented. Which was good, because it sucked

I remember that! had a mouse problem and you weren't allowed to have a cat

Sad days

But I could very easily find flats in London for sale for a million pounds/dollars
✨Rikkai Trash✨
I believe it! it's easy to find them even in downtown Boise for that much, and Boise is not near the hub London is
Rokesmith
And that's a cheap Chelsea flat. They top at something like twenty-five million
Rokesmith
I'm not surprised the downtown apartments go for that much either. Someone's usually willing to pay it

I've learned a decent amount about American urban development recently, although Las Vegas is probably a somewhat atypical example. For one thing, it's got very few condos

I am here to contribute literally nothing but a picture of the cat.

Pretty atypical yeah... It's booming rn because we suddenly have a football team.

Oh that's nice. The book I've got stops in 2012 when everything had slowed down again because of the housing crash and the recession. But good to know it picked up again

My uncle is getting bombarded with offers to buy his house. Like even I get them and it's only my address, I'm not the owner on record. He got the house at a huge discount during the slump too.
