'Today I am briefing my government that we believe with a reasonable level of certainty that Donald Trump attempted a coup' One NATO source set the stage, using terms more commonly used to describe unrest in developing countries.
"The defeated president gives a speech to a group of supporters where he tells them he was robbed of the election, denounces his own administration's members and party as traitors, and tells his supporters to storm the building where the voting is being held," the NATO intelligence official said.
"The supporters, many dressed in military attire and waving revolutionary-style flags, then storm the building where the federal law-enforcement agencies controlled by the current president do not establish a security cordon, and the protesters quickly overwhelm the last line of police.
"The president then makes a public statement to the supporters attacking the Capitol that he loves them but doesn't really tell them to stop," the official said. "Today I am briefing my government that we believe with a reasonable level of certainty that Donald Trump attempted a coup that failed when the system did not buckle.
A French public security expert said that large parts of ANY demonstration security plan were flat-out ignored, pointing to signs that somebody up the security command chain was deliberately aiding the attempt.
"I cannot believe the failure to establish a proper cordon was a mistake. These are very skilled police officials, but they are federal, and that means they ultimately report to the president. This needs to be investigated."
I'll be honest, I didn't peg this is as like.... a legitimate coup attempt. Well, I DID, but not on Trump's part. I thought he was just being himself, fanning fucking flames for the fuck of it, seeing what sticks to the wall.
I'd disagree with "they didn't know what to do in a coup" - some of them had at least SOME idea. we have no idea what that guy in pelosi's office might've gotten, for example.
the capital police failing to control this is, from what I hear, not unexpected-they're basically mall cops with fancy uniforms, not the Swiss Guard or the Beefeaters.
A US Capitol Police officer has died from events stemming from Wednesday's riot at the Capitol, three sources confirmed to CNN.
The officer is now the fifth person to die as a result of the day's violence. One woman was shot and killed by Capitol Police as the crowd breached the building and three others suffered medical emergencies that proved fatal.
Rioters on Wednesday breached the Capitol building and the Senate chamber, ransacked the offices of Pelosi and other Capitol offices, and a laptop was stolen from the office of Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley.
but yeah, whether you and your accomplices painstakingly cased the joint and planned out exactly how you would break into the candy store, or you all just got megadrunk and accidently smashed a shopping cart through the shop window and decided Why The Hell Not and gorged yourselves until security showed up
(or, for that matter, if your malicious and slightly smarter friends knew you'd been bragging about how fun it would be to crash the candy store and planned out exactly how they'd get as much candy as possible and bounce after your stupid drunk ass smashed the window, which is looking like the closest equivalent in this metaphor)
