i'm not over how he is just straight up like "the UN said having babies is a human right but i don't think that poor people should do it bc it's just exploiting welfare so the UN is wrong"
it's gross that he tries to use quotes from Robert Lewis Stevenson (the guy who wrote Jeckyl and Hyde/War of the Worlds) and Neitzche (noted opponent to antisemitism and nationalism) to try and further his point
One of the most discussed ideas about climate change is the free rider problem (responsibility diffusion through externalities), and the argument that this problem is responsible for a vast amount of the negative environmental impact. Garrett Hardin illustrates this in his famous article The Tragedy of the Commons. In this article Hardin argues that
“Morality is system-sensitive” and that due to increasing population density, treating the ‘commons’ as we did in frontier times is no longer acceptable. Do you agree with Hardin that as we increase our population we will need to reassess and more heavily regulate what has traditionally been ‘the commons’?
so, it's possible to agree with some things (resources are finite) and not others (the restriction of reproduction as a means to protect resources) in regards to the actual question of "will we need to reassess and heavily regulate the distribution of commons as the population grows"
eg; a lot of people feel an external pressure to have children (see: my aunt and the "so when are we going to see little Elle and Rikas" question), and contribute to the population without actually wanting to.
eliminate that external pressure to have children (for many reasons), and there would be a population drop there.
and then the "aging population" problem comes into effect. if the rate of reproduction drops, are there actually enough young people to care for the aging population and keep the engine of a capitalist society running?
