You hit the button and it'll make a revving sound like someone jazzing the engine of a motorcycle, and a little meter near your health bar will fill up

you need to rev three times to fill the meter, which will give you one bar of EX-act that will be spent on your next swing.

Additionally, if you swing your sword and hit the rev button at exactly the moment you hit the enemy, you'll instantly get a bar.

also that's not an unreasonable Goliath experience, the First Real Boss always feels like a pretty brutal spike on a fresh save file
