NO NO NOT True, the AMA did NOT "admit it lied" about hydroxy whatever. That is a LIE.
PolitiFact - No, the AMA didn’t rescind statement on...
mimi
I've been looking for that, so thanks.
Tamsie
mimi : I personally don't trust Rush to begin with.
mimi
I certainly don't either.

I wondered, "who said they did?" so I clicked, and yyyeeeeaaaaahhhhhhh
Άτροπος
Oy. Vey.
Megatron
Besides, not every doctor is an AMA member. Most of the ones I've known prefer their state MAs and usually have pungent words to describe the AMA.
Tamsie
Megatron : I didn't know that. guess it's like the ABA, which I never joined.
Megatron
If you take the cynical consensus, the AMA is mostly a bunch of snootybutts who keep declaring a change in rules for the profession every couple years.
Megatron
This can result in fewer people becoming doctors (more on that if you're interested), and in the CPT coding getting updated requiring system updates ALL OVER THE COUNTRY.
Megatron
Sometimes changes to the CPT code are necessary, like we're seeing for COVID. But having lived through CPT code changes a few times, it's a pain in the patoot.
Άτροπος
Megatron : We deal with AMA via ACCME, and “snootybutts who keep declaring a change in rules” is a remarkably apt description from our perspective!
Tamsie
Megatron : what is CPT coding?
Megatron
Άτροπος : high five
Megatron
Tamsie : The acronym stands for Current Procedural Terminology, and a lot of times we just call 'em "service codes." They're used to identify what procedures are performed. "Procedure" can mean anything from a lab draw to surgery and a bunch of stuff in between.

I could natter on how this affects medical records and charting, but "pain in the patoot" sums it up pretty well.
Megatron
The bottom line is that the insurance industry relies on them for billing purposes. That hopefully helps clarify the pain hospitals feel in their patoot when CPT changes happen.

before I get off my soapbox ... healthcare is complicated. It's complicated because humans are complicated. There's a whole elaborate ever-changing structure to Things Involving Healthcare. Any change (even those made in the name of simplification or accuracy) has consequences.

Tamsie
thanks for explaining
Megatron
No problem!

a "lab draw" is when an artist comes in and sketches what's going on in the laboratory, right? ;-)
