[Writing] Do you have a self insert? If so, tell me about them!

I have a character who started out as a self insert but has drifted a bit over the past - holy shit it's been literally a decade, happy birthday Li Yiran I guess

well happy birthday to Li Yiran! Yeah I have a self insert that drifted way out like that

In his current incarnation he's a college student living on Titan (the moon of Saturn)'s first civilian colony in a slice of life science fiction thing I'll maybe write eventually. Probably the most he has in common with me at this point is a profound sense of directionlessness without the structures of academia and impulse buying stupid shit for his friends

that's a big mood right there

I mean he's still kind of very self inserty in that the big pretentious Theme of the story is exploring what it's like to be young and relatively powerless in Uncertain Times and he's the character who's from a wealthy family who always feels like he should be doing more or being more responsible but that's not a fun answer

It's still a valid answer, that sort of stuff never really leaves a character

I don't have an actual canonical self insert but when I was in high school I very obviously wrote a short story about not!me

for my creative writing class

Priscilla is sort of a long-dead part of me at this point but I do have a self insert in my own canon

I also have a self-insert that exists in Steven Universe and other various canons just to touch the best hair

oh yeah I also have a gemsona that's a really obvious self insert

I have one that's kind of a self insert but with less self awareness and a very different life path

oh when I was twelve I wrote self-insert Zelda fan-fiction where my Mary-Sue self ended up with Link

That's a good use of a self insert

Priscilla started out as the really obvious self insert I used in Middle and Highschool, I wrote a lot of miserable weird goth escapism that I find very reflective of my mental state then, I did shitloads of RP and personal writing and story requests that all had the same vibe of tragedy or being ripped away from your life and then acceptance

eventually I had one I liked so much I hastily morphed her into an original character and it all got better and better from there

My current self insert is just me, a mundane whosit character in my own canon who's affliced with something called being "spirit cursed"

when I was in high school I wrote a self-insert as a member of Power Pack from Marvel Comics. :3

I think she eventually morphed into my Marvel Super-Heroes RPG character.

there are still some echoes but she's more of her own person now than just a thinly veiled copy of me.

being spirit cursed just means you're someone who wandered into a rare sentient pocket of magic that cropped up where the veil is thin and fulfilled something for it, sort of becoming an extension of it outside of it's domain. It's not got much say over you but you end up with distinctly inhuman features and urges that stick around even if it gets banished

But canon Vic is fun to draw and still weird wish fulfillment but this time more fun and colorful

that seems the trend

Virgil has enough elements of me that he's picked up over time that he's sort of a weird reverse self insert because he became my vent character for a while a few years ago
