Damn. I've definitely been there with modding before, and so I respect how hard of a decision this is to make. I'm glad you called it based on your limits instead of hurting yourself to make it work.

If you're ever in a place to pick this game up again some day (it doesn't sound like that's in the cards and I'm cool with that,
