[dad] incredibly, he is going home today

swoleregard
I'm pretty overwhelmed, it feels like an actual miracle

kikibug13
oh whew

skipthedemon
Oh, good to hear!

swoleregard
he's not 100% -- he's using a wheelchair at least until his hip finishes healing, he still has some fine motor issues, and there's definitely been an impact on his short-term memory

swoleregard
and we're all very aware that the psychological stuff has yet to even really begin

swoleregard
he has no memory of the accident, not sure if he ever will have one, but obviously he's going to have a lot of feelings about all of this

swoleregard
BUT

swoleregard
the first few weeks, the doctors kept reminding us that they/we simply couldn't know what his brain function would be like until he woke up, and even for a few weeks after that

swoleregard
and when he did wake up he basically... wasn't there at first

swoleregard
there was a very real, even likely scenario where I just never got my dad back

swoleregard
and we just had a totally normal conversation on the phone

swoleregard
everyone at the hospital keeps telling him how amazing it is and he can't really conceive of it because for him it's like he just woke up attached to stuff and with his body not quite working

swoleregard
but obviously I get it. a guy his age, with all the damage he went through... it feels like we hit one in a million odds

no mortal blade
I'm so happy to hear this, seriously just so happy it turned out htis way

Kira🌵
that's wonderful news!

swoleregard
there was almost no scenario where we thought he'd be out in (almost exactly) two months. it's so fucking wild.

swoleregard
I can't see him until Monday which is probably for the best because I think I'd just cry at him today and he doesn't need that lmao

skipthedemon
That really is incredible. My total layman's anecdotal remark from going through my mom having a stroke and then open heart surgery last year is I observed pain seemed to affect her short term memory/focus a lot and fine motor control some so if his pain levels improve possible positive ripple effects.

poliorketes
Wow, that's really amazing, I'm so happy for you guys <3

swoleregard
he's really not experiencing any pain unless his hip is overworked -- another major blessing

pharadyne
I'm so glad that his recovery has gone so well.

bluecanary
oh yay ;w;

ltmutiny
I'm so glad that it has gone this well!

Jay
that's amazing, I'm so happy for you
