The allergy is usually to cat dander and things that cats get into outside rather than the cat. Long hair cats have hair that is more like, well, hair if you will, then fur. Bathing is recommended too, for, ummm , cats and owners to help avoid the sneezy stuff.
mimi we had friends who had a hairless cat for allergic reasons, she was a really sweet kitty, unusual, but sweet nonetheless & she had a few sweaters for the colder months
