( rp ) not a meme, i'm just curious: what particular things do you emphasize or put more importance in when it comes to your muses' characterization? (thinking)
ᴋᴀᴢɪᴇ
i ask this from the standpoint of "we all play someone who's played by someone else, but there's always a difference" and i'm honestly curious
ᴋᴀᴢɪᴇ
canon point certainly plays a big part
𝖼𝗁𝖾𝗅𝗏𝗂𝗋𝖺
i try to reason everything i can out? x character acts like this because of y and z idk if i'm explaining this well
Pipkin
ngl a lot of my characterization points are out of spite? Like, the entire reason I started playing Thor was because I was sick and tired of all the 'he's just a big dumb jock who eats pop tarts all the time' that was going around.
Then I found out that I actually really like playing him so, there you go.
ᴋᴀᴢɪᴇ
againstme oooh! i get it actually :-D
Pipkin
but if there's a popular fandom/fanon take that I feel runs counter to the character as presented in canon? I do the hard opposite, sometimes to a ridiculous extreme before finally settling back a bit.
𝖼𝗁𝖾𝗅𝗏𝗂𝗋𝖺
like for example: i don't think rey can write because writing is rare as hell and she is self educated on an imperial computer display where there was probably no penmanship lessons
𝖼𝗁𝖾𝗅𝗏𝗂𝗋𝖺
stuff like that
ᴋᴀᴢɪᴇ
Pipkin hahaha i feel that one too. i personally also try to veer away from stereotypical impressions of a character i play while trying to keep things IC the best i can? but then there's always AUs hahaha
Pipkin
Yeah, exactly!
ᴋᴀᴢɪᴇ
againstme i live for that level of detail and that is why ily
𝖼𝗁𝖾𝗅𝗏𝗂𝗋𝖺
i am here to give full fantasy every time okay
Pipkin
My other big one is mode of speech? Like, there are things I would say a certain way that they definitely wouldn't, and I have to figure out wht their phrasing of it would be
Pipkin
Hux would not end a sentence with 'anyways', not unless he was mocking someone. Forever salty about that player for no reason
𝕡𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕥𝕠𝕞 𝕣𝕠𝕔𝕜
for me, it's getting the dialogue/manner of speaking/literal voice right. pmuch everything else can be integrated through more play of the character but if i can't get the voice right, none of the rest will feel right, either. i could get all the canon knowledge right and all the little actions and behaviors but it won't be right if the voice isn't
𝖼𝗁𝖾𝗅𝗏𝗂𝗋𝖺
ugh seconding the speech, i rewrite so many things because while the sentiment is good the wording has to sound ic
ᴋᴀᴢɪᴇ
man i would love to be good at mode of speech but that's one thing i struggle with. i do try to think "did they actually say that" or "does that term even exist for them" but i need to keep looking things up and referencing. like clips or book snippets. i'm not too concerned with jane, but i would definitely love to be better at that with jon
ᴋᴀᴢɪᴇ
and because i asked but not put in my 2 cents, lmfao
𝕡𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕥𝕠𝕞 𝕣𝕠𝕔𝕜
it took me a long while to feel comfortable with sansa in that way too lol
hobbats
it's very much in the dialogue to me, if I can't hear a character's manner of speaking in my head I can't play them. the rest of it I kind of find as I go, honestly. I start with the broad strokes canon gives us and fill in based on the situation and just find things out the more the character is faced with stuff outside canon.
𝕡𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕥𝕠𝕞 𝕣𝕠𝕔𝕜
re-watched a lot of clips and read more of the books, sometimes saying the lines out loud
𝕡𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕥𝕠𝕞 𝕣𝕠𝕔𝕜
it's def a process and takes practice
𝕡𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕥𝕠𝕞 𝕣𝕠𝕔𝕜
but i've always felt the more you play a character, you will get comfortable with them eventually lol
ᴋᴀᴢɪᴇ
i try to be IC as much as i can, but i... choose events or people or scenarios that idk "define" my characters? i guess they could be taken as headcanon in some instances or just liberties in interpretation hahaha which probably also explains why i love AUs? bc i'd love to explore how my character would react to something given their "base characterization"
ᴋᴀᴢɪᴇ
idk if that made sense (LOL) hahaha
ᴋᴀᴢɪᴇ
𝕡𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕥𝕠𝕞 𝕣𝕠𝕔𝕜 i agree haha they say practice makes perfect after all lol
hobbats
I'm definitely not perfectly ic all the time bc fun is more important than perfection and even the people who write official canon stuff do things that make ppl go wtf, so I don't worry hugely; I just try to be true to the character as I'm writing them across a game or a particular psl or scenario bc I can always make adjustments overall
𝕡𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕥𝕠𝕞 𝕣𝕠𝕔𝕜
yeah one of the things i love about aus is just getting to thrust those characters into diff situations and explore them through those scenarios
ᴋᴀᴢɪᴇ
hobbats aw man, that right there ^^^
FUN > PERFECTION, Y'ALL
hobbats
so yeah, for me it's voice and... can I justify the character making x choice? ok but in a different scenario she made y choice, how might that work and why?
ᴋᴀᴢɪᴇ
YES hard same
𝕡𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕥𝕠𝕞 𝕣𝕠𝕔𝕜
yeah i've long since stopped trying for perfection. i just go for what i feel is good for the character/writing. tho my own standards are always higher for myself because i've always been that way
ᴋᴀᴢɪᴇ
my personal characterization nitpicks are mostly because i just find them fun to do and not because i want to be perfect or better than others. but like 𝕡𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕥𝕠𝕞 𝕣𝕠𝕔𝕜 i also place high standards on myself so lol that's how it is hahaha
hobbats
I think we all have our favorite aspects of the same character and it's neat to see all the different takes from people who love the same chars
ᴋᴀᴢɪᴇ
yeah that's one thing i was trying to get at with this! like... i love seeing all of you reys and kylo bens (well most of you in my timeline are them hahaha) and you're all so different but the same and i love that and i'm curious how???
𝕡𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕥𝕠𝕞 𝕣𝕠𝕔𝕜
yeah it's always neat to see how people approach the same stuff/characters/hobby lol
𝕡𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕥𝕠𝕞 𝕣𝕠𝕔𝕜
i do that a lot with published authors just cuz i'm curious about their process
ᴋᴀᴢɪᴇ
yeah it is amazing how creative people can be a part of me will always be intimidated by the other people who also play my character, but a part of me is also chinhands at them for their interpretation hahaha
ɪ'ᴍ ᴀ ꜱᴛᴀʀ.
i think i try to approach things from solely their perspective as much as possible? which i guess is normal, but i try not to be afraid of a character making assumptions or doing things that i definitely know are Bad News for them because i want them to be as true to themselves as possible...
ɪ'ᴍ ᴀ ꜱᴛᴀʀ.
and i also try to highlight the parts of their personality that are perhaps more subtle or not drawn upon too much, even if it's just in the meta, because it helps me flesh them out and make them seem more real than just a character made up of words... speech patterns and word choices for dialogue are also important for me too, yeah
ɪ'ᴍ ᴀ ꜱᴛᴀʀ.
i guess i also think that like... someone can have a very intense detailed knowledge of the canon but that doesn't mean anything if you can't get the personality or voice right
𝕡𝕙𝕒𝕟𝕥𝕠𝕞 𝕣𝕠𝕔𝕜
+1
ᴋᴀᴢɪᴇ
^^^ all that tbh
ᴋᴀᴢɪᴇ
also i’ve said this before but i love your highlighting of the subtle bits of their personality and all the little details you put into your tags ɪ'ᴍ ᴀ ꜱᴛᴀʀ.
ɪ'ᴍ ᴀ ꜱᴛᴀʀ.
ahhh you're always such a sweetheart..... too kind to me i'll keep doing my best
hemogoblin
yeah i tend to zoom in on what i interpret as the really Formative events/moments in the character's life that i feel influences their decision-making and kind of build characterization from there
hemogoblin
if i don't feel i can get a handle on that/their base motivations i can't play them full stop
c_for_characters
I like to really consider gesture. Small nuances.
