"if they are real enough to you that you want to write fiction about them" ??? I... I write fiction about fictional people. I mean, the RPF folks can do what they like, but I feel like there's a very deep divide in how that person and I feel about fandom on multiple levels
I'm pretty sure an anti convention would be like that one joke about denominational boundaries and two guys on a bridge: this one, mild suicide reference in the setup.
Yeah, like...literally anyone who comprehends the purpose of a library could tell them how absolutely LUDICROUS everything they think is and how terrible their takes are
peach jenny is one of the few people I would legit lay hands on. like really, fuck this person confirming for me what anti's think of the non white people that see through their bullshit.
like I'm kinda in my feelings about Hazbin Hotel and it's reaction from these people. they say they want stuff from non-straight, non white people but it's obvious they only want specific things from us
...this is a really silly thing to be a pedant about, but... it... is possible to boil water at 99 degrees Celsius if you mess with the pressure part of the equation.
Those words shouldn't be able to pass someone's lips/fingers without a full-blown Snidely Whiplash mustache popping into existence on their face, how do you become that ridiculously awful and not realize you are a cartoon villain from a PSA about how hate is bad
reminds me of that anti in DA fandom who was white who would draw OCs of color that were always at best a little racially insensitive and then one day they went off about how they just "don't know what POCs want because I'm drawing characters of their race and they're never satisfied" wah wah
Some of these people strike me as malicious, but some of them -- like that kid, for instance? They seem more like they just haven't grasped the idea that something can be harmful for them without being objectively bad, and it's okay for them to avoid that thing without demanding no one engage with/produce it.
Well, I mean, the ones who are having trouble with "my feelings are not objective truth" often come off as teens, and I'm not going to throw around condemnation for 15 year olds who haven't learned nuance and how to set and navigate boundaries yet. They need to learn, and it's unacceptable for them to hurt other people while they're learning.
I feel bad for those kids because you can tell their hearts are in the right place, they just haven't parsed the "your experiences are not universal" concept yet
watching peach jenny scramble to apologize was entertaining I'm ngl I think she tried to delete the tweet then everyone posted the screenshot everywhere
Meanwhile there are the other kind of antis out there suicide-baiting or using the phrase 'freaks of color' and those are the ones that will be first up against the wall when the revolution comes
Pretty much. I REALLY feel bad for the kids who are getting sucked in by older antis who use this super-strict "nothing vaguely questionable is ever okay!" framework to bully, harass and pathologize any boundary pushing. The older, bullying antis can go fuck themselves.
I don't normally enjoy watching that but after reading freaks of color then having her trying to explain what she meant as she dug herself deeper in a hole had me going "yes"
mostly during my last year of college and when you break down their argument they get really upset and normally go the racist or bigoted language route though most of those kids were small town I just moved to the city for the first time kids who just graduated high school
another thing that rubs me wrong is the whole we have to watch kids on the internet thing look I raise at least 4-5 kids during the school year let me have my place
Expecting the entire internet to be kid-safe, even in places SPECIFICALLY MARKED AS NOT MEANT FOR KIDS TO GO, is like having kids wander into a construction site past all the hazard signs and then wanting to sue the workers if the kid gets hurt
And if they're old enough to read the signs, then they're old enough that the people in charge of those kids should have educated them about basic safety
(And honestly, sometimes it's even worse because it's more like the kids wandered into YOUR OWN HOUSE and then people get mad about the books on your shelves and the art on your walls, as though not padlocking the door is the same thing as deliberately enticing kids into your parlor to see the things that you put there for YOU, not them)
yeah the idea that I have to ~accept blame~ if a child reads adult content I write or whatever pisses me off my tumblr is marked 18+ so if kids lie about their age to get there that's not my deal, my explicit fics are marked as such so if kids click on them despite the warning that's not my deal if they can't handle themselves at all their parents should
though I'm also not the kind of person who thinks older teenagers need to be sheltered from sex (actual porn maybe, since the porn industry pushes a lot of unhealthy/unhelpful narratives, but not sexual content in general)
I hardly even knew people my age back in the day who weren't looking at porn/smutfic/whatever when they were underage, because we actively sought it out and lied about our ages on the internet regularly
Like, if they do, fine, that's their choice, and I fully support having explicit content warned for so they can avoid it, but like...it's weird that teens are supposedly that different from when I grew up
Mind you, the internet was a lot smaller back in my day, and if not necessarily safer, then at least it was hard for predators or gross shit to find you unless you were doing something seriously inadvisable
That said, teens still have hormones last I checked so I don't know why they wouldn't want porn and smut the same as they did at my age, even if everything else might be different
yeah like seeing the posts of "IM A MINOR ADULTS SHOULD KNOW BETTER" has me going what? or how a 17 year old shouldn't date an 18 year old cause 18 means adult and I'm going huh?
honestly as far as fandom content goes I think it's gotten more safe, because censors meant we used to have to hide adult content behind codewords that were confusing to people new to it
if you're a minor, you know what the content is then why are you upset that it's for adults? or the new thing about how adults shouldn't be in fandom and it's like you do know you don't stay 16 forever right?
Also, speaking as someone who was not looking for sexy fics as a teen (at least to start with) and kept stumbling across them by accident because wtf does lemon mean... I... got over it?
I think there's been some good video essays on this phenomenon basically boiling down to call outs turning into a sort of social currency so having these wild standards gets them social status in this circle
I didn't think I'd get here, but I'm starting to genuinely prefer the days of internet edgelords. At least the edgelords themselves and everyone speaking to them knew they were in the wrong, fandomentalists genuinely fuck some kids up because they sometimes sound like they could be right
It basically functions in the same way that I think a lot of toxic groups prosper. It gives people a sense of belonging, but you become tied to the toxic ideas of the group and the moment you lose favor you go right back to 0
not to mention fandoms that allow fandomentalists to exist are strongly dominated by queer afab people who are far easier targets than people actually doing harm
aka: there's a horrible part of me that whats to see the T R Y to do this in spaces populated by straight cis white men then I shudder and say no. even they don't deserve that shit.
also as for Giorno... the Italian age of consent is 14. which will lead to another discussion of how an overwhelming amount of these idiots are american.
I'm not really sure about the age of consent law argument. Mostly for a lack of knowledge and so I'm not really confident in talking about that at all. For example, I remember discussions in the past where Japan was used as a similar example
we don't clown them because we're pedos that wallow in depraved fiction. we clown them because it's obvious they don't really care for the people they swear to protect and advocate for. or at least the ones that don't do want these people want, and that's what it's really about isn't it?
Liking something in fiction doesn't mean you want it in real life. I know a remarkable amount of ace people who don't really want a sexual relationship probably ever who read and write smut.
lmao I swaer my Gladion muse just woke up for a second to agree with you, Chikusa is allowed what he wants and Gladion doesn't even know what that is in context but he knows enough to know that what Chikusa wants is probably questionable
Having researched this, national age of consent in Japan is ridiculously low, but lots of regional laws put it at higher. In Tokyo, it's 18, with exceptions for minors in serious romantic relationships.
i would love to see that happen in khr tbh.... "i killed this guy, but in an alternative timeline ten years in the future, and he's alive in this timeline and, despite also kind of being connected to that timeline, isn't pressing charges"
I mean, I get that but also maybe your moral panic is slightly arbitrary and manufactured if you only get up in arms about one very specific type of criminal
Like, at that point are you about actual morals or are you about personal revulsion, because I'm pretty sure morality has things to say about (checks notes) murder
