Quinn Angstrom
what even is the reasoning behind youtube not letting videos for kids be added to playlists
Quinn Angstrom
like not even the 'watch later' playlist
OneMoreTurn
Youtube being dumb, I assume
Quinn Angstrom
yes but what is their dumb reason
▲ndrusi
I would imagine that when you add something to a playlist they use that to gather data on you
OneMoreTurn
Probably something related to COPPA and assuming only kids would want to watch "kid's content"
𝔞𝔢𝔱𝔢𝔯𝔫𝔞✶𝔞𝔪𝔞𝔫𝔱𝔢𝔰
the dumbest part is you can still add them to playlists
Quinn Angstrom
you can?
𝔞𝔢𝔱𝔢𝔯𝔫𝔞✶𝔞𝔪𝔞𝔫𝔱𝔢𝔰
just, from the search menu and not the videos itself
▲ndrusi
(or to be marginally fairer, it might be that technically adding things to playlists is inherently gathering data)
Quinn Angstrom
bizarre
Niamh Vibes
On mobile YouTube, you can also shrink videos into a smaller window while you’re searching for something else
Niamh Vibes
But not for kid’s videos
Niamh Vibes
It’ll auto pause instead
Quinn Angstrom
actually if it's based on gathering data then wouldn't just WATCHING videos for kids be inherently data-gathery
RobotApocalypse
iirc it has to do with tying the data gathering to a specific account? i think they can gather general data like number of views on a video, but they can't collect data on which accounts those views came from
Quinn Angstrom
it clearly does, though, on account of they show up on my watch history
Quinn Angstrom
youtube knows I watched them
RobotApocalypse
that's my understanding of COPPA anyway. i think they chose to segregate it by whether the video is for kids or not because FOR SOME REASON the law's written in such a way that if someone lies about their age it's still your fault
RobotApocalypse
oh, well in that case idk then haha
RobotApocalypse
it's probably really patchwork how they deal with it
▲ndrusi
yeah if adding to playlists is disabled on the video page itself but not the search page then that suggests they didn't necessarily entirely think things through
