Jack Sparrow vs Will Turner
for all of the franchise's horrible issues, this is basically a perfect swordfight scene
Quinneapolis
Jack's shitty beat-up sword, Will's polished and excellent condition blade
Quinneapolis
the blows are to the beat of the music
Quinneapolis
Jack immediately gets a sense for Will's level of skill after just two exchanges
Quinneapolis
"But how's your footwork?" being a cover for Jack trying to get Will away from the door so he can flee
Beans
this and the water wheel fight are two of my favorite fights scenes
Quinneapolis
Will's sword throw locking the door shut but not hitting Jack despite him clearly having the aim to do so
Quinneapolis
showing that he doesn't actually want to kill Jack, despite his bravado
Quinneapolis
the fight escalates to use the space of the smithy in more complex ways
Quinneapolis
the banter that's half banter and half Jack trying to mind game Will into making a mistake
Quinneapolis
Will bringing Jack with him up into the rafters, where his apparent lack of balance will put him at a disadvantage
Niamh Vibes
Pirates is just a really astounding movie
Quinneapolis
Will gets the upper hand and Jack, being a pirate, cheats
Quinneapolis
and the first signs of Jack's moral complexity when he has Will at gunpoint and still goes as far as "PLEASE move??" rather than shooting him
Quinneapolis
it's just
Quinneapolis
fight choreography in service of character and story
Quinneapolis
done absolutely perfectly

i also hard second the waterwheel fight as a strong contender
Quinneapolis
it's up there with the big Green Destiny duel in Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Quinneapolis
for perfect movie fight scenes

The contrast between Will's sword and Jack's reminds me of a vid I saw about two historical swords owned by two historical men

Have you been lead to this via Jill Bearup on the One X-Cellent Scene playlist or should I link her video about it?
Quinneapolis
I super have
Quinneapolis
it's a thought I've had before
Quinneapolis
she just led me back to it

A Tale of Two Swords
TL:-DR version: One sword is aspirational, a badge of office and nobility, the other is a work-a-day hacking tool.
Quinneapolis
Will's is even a bit more than that
Quinneapolis
because you have THREE swords to compare
Quinneapolis
Jack's is a piece of shit, because he's a sloppy tricksy pirate whose ship just sunk
Quinneapolis
The sword Will presents to the navy guy in an earlier scene is all gold leaf and fancy decoration
Quinneapolis
the sword Will uses to fight Jack is simple, not flashy at all, but in excellent condition for using to fight
Quinneapolis
a sword for a pirate, a sword for a noble, and a sword for a fighter
Vehrec
very true, though I would want to compare blades as well-if Will is using something like a rapier, then there's still aspirations in that shape alone. Jack's definitely got something like a saber, not a cutlass, it's a bit too long.
Quinneapolis
if you're someone who makes as many enemies as Jack Sparrow, you might want a sword with a bit more reach to it over practicality at sea
Niamh Vibes
I don't remember the exact path, but I remember that following the plot of the movies through the sword Will presented to the navy guy is honestly fascinating
Niamh Vibes
Like I think it goes through all these different hands until it just. Comes back to Will, before he kills Davy Jones
oh i'm scary
yeah it's ultimately the sword he uses forever as captain of the Dutchman and it's kinda cool
Gabiluzbad
PotC was lightning in a bottle
Gabiluzbad
Disney keeps on trying to recreate it with other rides
Niamh Vibes
There's also such a quiet tragedy to how this scene ends
Niamh Vibes
Will went toe-to-toe with a fearsome pirate, in a battle that displays all of Will's strengths
Niamh Vibes
and his drunk boss is going to get the credit
Niamh Vibes
Will cannot overcome his social station
Beans
disney's been chasing the spark of the original potc for the last two decades
