unfortunately i think this was p much inevitable since pokemon only broke into the chinese market very recently. gen7 was the first gen to get an official release in mainland china, and iirc nintendo had to partner with tencent to get the switch into china? dont quote me on that zz

but i recall it being said somewhere that there was a clause about china having a hand in making some games with nintendo characters in exchange for helping with distribution (and its china so you kinda have to go through tencent for that). makes sense that theyd want their own pokemon game

they probably paid to give unite its own special trailer, that and i read somewhere that some of the games in the first june announcement are banned in china (might just be Go?) so they wouldnt have been able to show the same announcement to them anyway

It's things like this, along with TPC hammering down more on mobile games in general since Go, the PR nightmare and lukewarm reception that was SWSH, and overpriced subscriptions that has been making me fall less out of interest with Pokemon as a franchise

theyve announced a lot of mobile games lately but snap got a lot of positive attention and mystery dungeon did well i think, plus iirc nintendo said theyre cooling it on mobile games now and ACNH being a big success was a part of that

from what ive seen the dlc so far is pretty great too tbh so thats a good sign as well. a bit late to save swsh but there may be some hope for gen9 to be an actual improvement on the ideas swsh botched spectacularly

I just honestly can't see this going anywhere in the west. Maybe it'll do OK because of the Pokemon license but I doubt it has much staying power.

It's def. a move geared way more towards the Chinese market and I genuinely don't know how China as a whole feels about tencent

I just had a student that was showing me his favorite game on his phone, and the intro screen had a big ol' Tencent logo plastered onto it. Pokemon is still a hit in China, so I think the kiddos over there will probably be psyched to play this game. This whole move is definitely to get more of a following in China, to be sure.
