My mom sings and plays piano, I picked up the violin to play with her. Dad is great on guitar and my little brother went drums - guitar - piano

Neither I, nor my dad can sing for shit. My dad's sisters can't sing. My grandmother can't sing. Literally every girl from my dad's side of the family has story of a chorus instructor who told them they couldn't sing or were told to sing silently or something.

But I can hear notes really, really well, so I know when I'm off and it was frustrating as a kid to want to be able to do something and being told you can't.

So like. Over the last few years or so my commute got longer and longer. Now it's 45 minutes one way and I am by myself in the car so I'm like. Absently humming and stuff to things on the radio

Mom the other night enlisted me as her page turner and I'm humming along and she stops dead in her tracks and goes

and I'm like "I can't sing well. I can fucking match notes. I can't hold them for very long and it sounds tinny."

And I'm sitting here grinning and she's bitching like "30 years I've been your mother and I didn't know my own daughter could sing, what the FUCK."

So anyway apparently I've been hiding this talent of being able to match pitch. Which I ALWAYS KNEW I HAD BECAUSE OF VIOLIN but okay.

And I'm like "you think it's talent but it's just a buttload of hard work over x amount of years" and she is inSISTant that it is talent only

Haha, what. There are some people gifted with perfect pitch, amazing lung capacity, or whatever, or cursed with the opposite, but nah most people can sing well enough to sound nice if they learn some breath control and stuff about music in general.

I feel you on the sight singing. I can usually track relative pitch... decently, if you give me a starting note, but have nothing near perfect pitch. Throw in key changes and all bets are off.
