HEY KNITTING PEOPLE I want to learn to knit; I have a selection of inherited needles but no yarn. Where should I start? Are no. 10 needles fine? please I am Baby

Honestly, I'd say it depends on what you want to do with them?
𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜
Like, how fine do you want your knitting to be
𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜
(Correct me if I'm wrong, no10 in us sizes is 6mm I think?)
𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜
Which tbh, is probably just fine, especially if you work with fairly thick yarn
𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜
Though, personally I tend to be very tight in my knitting (meaning that I pull on my stitches for good measure and such, to the point that my best friend calls me out like once a month on being "brutal" with my knitting) |D
𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜
which means that I tend to get frustrated by knitting with anything smaller than 3.5mm (US 4)
elven wrongs
I also have a 5mm pair
elven wrongs
I inherited these from my grandmother and/or sister so they're eclectic
elven wrongs
but yes, tell me about yarn choices! for baby's First Shitty Scarf!
𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜
…goodness. Honestly like. It depends on how much money you want to spend?
𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜
And also, what kind of scarf.
𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜
As in, for which season, how cold does it get where you are, ect?
elven wrongs
I want to spend not much money to start
elven wrongs
see if this clicks w me
elven wrongs
and I don't really wear scarfs much but ???
elven wrongs
*scarves
𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜
Okay then, how cold does it get in winter? :|a
elven wrongs
snows-cold, down below 0C on the regular
elven wrongs
I mean, this past winter was warm
elven wrongs
but
elven wrongs
but not, like, bits-of-you-will-fall-off cold
𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜
Okay, that I can work with, we have similar winters where I am
elven wrongs
also my mom is allergic to wool
𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜
Okay, then cotton?
elven wrongs
yes, that would probs be best
Sunny Deerlight
no. 10 needles are fine! It'll help you see what you're doing better to have them on needles that size. My favorite brand is Lion Brand yarn. I love their "Homespun", but that's not great for first projects. Maybe try some of the "for baby" type yarns - those tend to be super soft.
Sunny Deerlight
Not Acrylics. Those are cheapest, but they are scratchy and not very much fun to wear.
𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜
Quick search through ravelry got me this brand?
elven wrongs
next question: how much is in a unit of yarn? how many units do I need?
𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜
As said, depends on what you want. The one I linked you is about 8$ per 100g
𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜
Depending on how long the scarf is supposed to be, you'll need two or three.
elven wrongs
ok, thank you!
elven wrongs
you're very helpful and I appreciate it!
𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝙼𝚊𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐𝚜
You are welcome! :3

Seconding that 10 should be fine for a scarf, just double check the thickness of your yarn since mismatching can lead to pain. A lot of yarn makers indicate on the package what gauge of needle will work best.
kawaiigami
Scarves are also great first knitting projects-not a lot of complicated stitches required.
elven wrongs
this would be so much easier if I could go into a Local Crafting Shop, but of course they're closed
kawaiigami
Yeah. :-(
elven wrongs
(at least, I assume they're closed. they better be closed.)
kawaiigami
(Michael's is doing curbside pickup, I think. Order online and they bring it to you.)
elven wrongs
(I'm not sure where the nearest Michael's is...hmm.)
elven wrongs
besides what I'm missing from the Local Crafting Shop is the Person Who Knows All to guide me through the shelves to the exact right item
elven wrongs
y'all are proving excellent substitutes, but...putting my hands on things...
kawaiigami
That is helpful indeed, and Local Crafting Shops have many nice things that you can buy while feeling good about supporting local business. For a first try to see if you like it, though, buying something Good But Inexpensive from a chain can be a good idea.
