Nick meeting Fran for the first time is both horrifying and hilarious
Maxie
Because he pretty much watches from the window as Dino is best to death with a spiked baseball bat. And she walked on in panting, covered in blood. Probably stares at him, all wary because of his appearance.
Maxie
Fran clicks well with most people but Nick and her have a very slow friendship. Mostly because of differing morals and methods.
Maxie
It’s not extreme, he’s lawful good obviously. But Fran is chaotic good/teetering on chaotic neutral. It’s not easy for them to get along at first, especially with how emotionally wired she is about finding Shaun- and her distrust of cops.
Maxie
He’s fairly black and white in his moral thinking, but she’s pretty grey. Late game she definitely starts to gain a lot of respect for him though. She’s met very few cops who were.. good people.
Maxie
They’re definitely on opposite ends of the spectrum when they first meet, but through the game they kinda meet at a midpoint
Maxie
Mm, more like complementary opposites tho. They both believe in justice against shitty people, they both care about the freedom of others, and they both can relate to pre-war imagery and ideals. Old souls.
Maxie
The only main issue between them is that Fran is a lot looser with minor morals- like small time thievery. She isn’t likely to steal anything but she isn’t exactly above it. Fran also makes a lot of very poor decisions during the climax and post-institute parts of the game.
Maxie
She ends up diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder, and is under a lot of stress after being caught in the middle of a war between three factions, not to mention her son about to die/being a bit of a monster in her eyes. It’s enough to drive anyone a little crazy, but that doesn’t necessarily mean all her decisions are excusable.
Maxie
But I think he begins to understand the large amount of stress she is under is causing her to make poor choices she wouldn’t otherwise make. They spend a lot of time talking when she isn’t out trying to do quests.
Maxie
And she also begins to realize he isn’t as uptight as she thought he’d was with the whole Eddie Winter situation.
Maxie
But if there is anything that can summarize how things are going between them at the start of the game it’s a quote directly from Nick:
Maxie
Kellogg is a dangerous man... but so are you.
Maxie
He most likely sees her as trouble at first. It’s only through their hardships that they begin to “get” each other.
