This 26-year-old became a small-town California mayo...
I have never heard is "snakebit" as slang before.
CChuuni
Moosey: maybe it's zoomer slang
CC: noooooo it's probably from before the greatest gen. Like older than Joe Biden and "pony soldier" - which means I need Carver to use it unironically asap
CChuuni
Yoooooo they built the school on toxic waste wtf. And I thought building a school on a swamp was stupid!! (My parents' town)
Whatson
Dumping fuel pretty sure is for dire emergencies, like a plane about to be shot down or preparing for a belly landing. Why did it dump fuel and why do they think it purposely did it over this specific town?
Whatson
And snakebit is an old term, like a mining town that is run down after the gold rush came and left.
CChuuni
yup
CChuuni
And dunno, they didn't dump it in rich white areas I'll have to check with environmental justice advo.s
Whatson
Its terrible that this happened, but that's my question: how do you aim dumping fuel? Yeah if they waited until they were over this specific area that would be pretty shitty.
CChuuni
Given they didn't even offer full cleanup? Yeah! Wtf

Students Sue Delta Over Jet Fuel Dumping Over Elemen...
hmmmm standard protocol and apparently the timing does seem a little suspect
Whatson
Well, there was nothing in this specific article that suggests timing was "suspect" but that is an unfortunate event. Not being more willing to help them is definitely lousy of them.
Exacerangutan
the thing to suspect is as far as I can tell is criminal negligence
Whatson
They can surely get them on if this was truly an emergency or not. How bad was this at risk of crashing?
CChuuni
not sure. As it is it was a flight to Shanghai like RIGHT BEFORE the lockdown so it might have just been that it was locked down in the middle of the flight
Exacerangutan
I mean dumping fuel is important but if you have so much fuel you need to dump it, and you aren't literally about to crash, you can also divert to not be right over a populated area >_>
Exacerangutan
which you aren't supposed to do afaik >_>
Exacerangutan
I mean dumping over a populated area just for kicks
CChuuni
No it's SOP, whenever they have an emergency landing for any reason, Delta pilots are told to fuel dump.
CChuuni
For. Any. Reason.
Whatson
Jesus
Exacerangutan
...I mean
Exacerangutan
...it is SOP to dump fuel at some point when you plan out an unscheduled landing because your fuel load is meant to match up with your flight plan so if the plan changes you're over weight to land, but I can't imagine you dump fuel immediately no matter where you are in relation to your diverted objective
Exacerangutan
"The Federal Aviation Administration has a handful of regulations in place: the plane has to be at least 2,000 feet above the highest obstacle along the route, at least five miles from any other aircraft and away from populated areas and bodies of water whenever possible." But I think the regulations were softened basically to "ask ATC" a few years ago.
Exacerangutan
...which is double-weird since the air crew apparently said they had things under control and didn't need to burn off, much less dump, much less dump at just barely above the legal minimum dump altitude right over a populated area. >_>
CChuuni
Yeah

People forget these lawsuits also have a dual purpose in that they are to deter repeat incidents and send a message
